Career

My work experiences thus far have given me skills that will help prepare me for future jobs in the education field.

Here, I have attached my current resume. It includes information about my schooling, work experience, technical skills, leadership, and involvement:

There are two experiences in particular that I believe have begun to ready me for my career.

  1. Summer Camp Counselor: Being a counselor has given me invaluable practice leading a large group of kids. As a future teacher, I need to be able to command the attention of a room of students and keep them active and motivated. I have learned how difficult this can be, and I have observed and used multiple techniques to quiet a room and present material in a way that excites people. In addition, I gained practice in logistical matters such as project planning and generating schedules.
  2. Math tutor: In the past few years, I have worked as a tutor for individual students, through a kindergarten tutoring service, and for a high school in the Columbus community. Tutoring has helped me learn how to answer questions in a way that can be understood on a more basic level than I am used to. When teaching or tutoring, it is important to break concepts down in smaller pieces so that the student can build their own conclusions, and as I have experienced, that is easier said than done. Students learn the best in so many different ways, so it’s necessary to present material from different angles as well. As a result, I have begun to take what I know and put it in multiple perspectives.

Artifact 3: Quarantine Crafts

This past year has been a bit stressful. Everyone has found their own little ways of coping with the overwhelming effects of the Coronavirus. I myself found solace in crafting.

After being in quarantine for a few months, I decided I needed to do something new, so I logged onto YouTube and started watching how-to videos. Soon enough, I was ready to buy my first crochet hook.

Several trips to the craft store and balls of yarn later, I had finished my first blanket! Now, I am in the process of making two more blankets and I’m learning how to crochet a winter hat. I’m so glad to have found something that really interests me!

G.O.A.L.S.

This year I am focusing on the L.S. of my academic G.O.A.L.S. On the subject of leadership development, I have recently become involved in the Ohio Union Activities Board. Since then I have joined the Special Events, Socials, and Marketing Committees. I am also a project and marketing lead for an event that’s coming up at the end of October. In regards to service engagement, I am pleased to announce my involvement with the Red Cross this year. I am a donor ambassador for blood drives in the Columbus area. In addition, I have become a part of two different tutoring associations. I am working with Kindergarten Corps reading picture books to kindergarteners, and I am also working with Metro Higher Learning to tutor high school students in calculus.

In the future I hope to develop more in the area of global engagement. When travel restrictions lighten up, I hope to spend a semester abroad learning more about different cultures and exposing myself to new experiences!

Year in Review

I am more than pleased with my first year at The Ohio State University. Though it has not been easy, I have truly grown as a scholar. The year’s academic challenges have tested more than just my knowledge. I have had to find study strategies that work for my new classes, get used to living with a changing schedule, and get past numerous learning obstacles. Thanks to the university’s several resources on campus, I have developed as more of an independent student!

In addition, I am looking forward to getting more involved in campus life as my time continues at Ohio State. There are so many teams, clubs, and organizations that look interesting and fun to me and as I’ve gone through the majority of my first year here, I know what my goals are for the fall. I can’t wait to put myself out there.

I am ready to tackle autumn 2020. See you next year OSU!

Artifact 2: Walk to End Alzheimer’s

I recently had the opportunity to volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association at the Akron Rubber Ducks stadium in Akron, OH. I helped put on a walk to support both awareness for Alzheimer’s and the friends and families of those who are suffering from the disease. We wrote inspirational quotes and sayings all along the two-mile route to encourage the people who came to show their appreciation and support. I’m so grateful that I had the chance to learn more about Alzheimer’s as well as do my part to spread the message of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Artifact 1: ASP

One of most valuable experiences I’ve ever had was getting the chance to go down to Southern Ohio for a week as a part of Appalachian Service Project. I had the opportunity to work on multiple farms and learn more about the production of several goods that reach the homes of so many people all over the country. I was also able to spend a day working with Meals on Wheels, an organization that provides warm meals daily to people who have trouble leaving their homes. This picture shows my crew for one of our days of service. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to share my love of service with other students. I look forward to having many other volunteering experiences in the future!
