Columbus To-Do List #2

On Saturday, November 17th, my HES roommates and I decided to go to COSI, the local science museum in downtown Columbus. We rode the COTA bus down high street and then walked across the bridge to reach COSI. We had all been to COSI before, but only as little children, so we were excited to go through all of the exhibits again. My favorite exhibit has always been, and always will be, the Progress exhibit. You get to walk through the same town in two different eras, the 1880’s and the 1960’s. The displays are so realistic and fun, it’s hard not to act like a little kid and play make-believe. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Gadgets exhibit. There were lots of cool experiments and displays that demonstrated concepts I am currently learning about in my physics course. If I were to go back to COSI I would have a better plan for lunch. We left for COSI around 10:00am from our dorm, only having breakfast bars for breakfast. So after only visiting a few exhibits we were all hungry and ready for lunch. Unfortunately, the food at COSI is expensive, so we held off on lunch until we got back to campus. Therefore, I would recommend that next time we decide to go to COSI we go either way before or after lunch. Overall, I would definitely recommend visiting COSI to a friend. It’s such a fun place where you can learn something new in a fun and hands-on way. I would love to go again!

Artifact #2

An artifact from fall semester that is significant to me is the scarlet and grey tassel that I received at freshman convocation at the beginning of the semester. To me, it represents my commitment to graduate with a civil engineering degree. It currently hangs on the shelf above my desk and serves as a constant reminder of my goals in college and it helps motivate me to keep putting forth my best effort in everything I do. It also helps me to keep things in perspective, especially when engineering coursework becomes overwhelming. I know that the time and effort I put forth now will really pay off in the end. I am very much looking forward to the next four years and when I am able to proudly wear the tassel on graduation day.

On Thursday, October 25th, 2018 my HES peer mentor group and I all ventured to a local bar and grill called 4th Street. My peer mentor, Paulina, recommended the venue as a pleasant and cheap place to get food. Having a go-to place to eat and hangout like this is a necessity for any college student. On Thursdays, 4th Street offers $3.00 burgers and half-off appetizers from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm. What a steal! Fourth Street is a charming little whole-in-the-wall restaurant with a nice atmosphere, very conducive to a fun night out. The whole group sat together, eating and sharing stories about our weeks. The food was pretty good, especially considering the price. I enjoyed a black bean burger and fries and a few mac and cheese bites. A few others ordered nachos, which also had good reviews. Next time I think I would order the chicken tenders. I most enjoyed the conversation with my group and people watching. Overall, I would definitely recommend Fourth Street to a friend.

Artifacts

An artifact that is significant to me is my gold medal from my final FIRST Robotics competition in April of 2018. I joined my high school robotics team the fall of my freshman year, unsure of what to expect and it ended up being one of the best decisions of my high school career. I was able to meet so many new people that shared a common passion for STEM and I was also able to challenge myself in many new ways. My sophomore year, I became Co-President of the team and worked long hours every week in order to help our team achieve success in competitions. I also was a member of the drive team for all four years, a large commitment that was exhausting, yet very rewarding. After many 2nd place finishes at regionals over the years, the team was finally able to secure a win at the Buckeye Regional in Cleveland, Ohio. This was the best way to finish my senior season and every time I look at this medal I relive the joyous moment of victory and reflect on the hard work it took from every single member of the team to get us to that point.
