The Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S. are the ideals that make up the H&S program. These individual categories of Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development and Service Engagement all represent individual categories of development and action that are necessary for members of H&S to become leaders in society. These GOALS also help H&S members develop their future plans by supplying a solid base to start and clear endpoint to reach.
My future plans most easily incorporate the GOALS of Original Inquiry and Academic Enrichment due to my desire to participate in research. Through research experience, particularly in the field of medicine, I will be able to learn more about how the human body adapts and overcomes different challenges, and I will learn how to use proper lab techniques and how to ask questions that may eventually lead to my own research project.
The areas of Global Awareness and Service Engagement, although not as easily incorporated in my future plans, are still very relevant to my career plans. I plan to take part in a study abroad program in Japan, not only because I find language to be fascinating, but because it will provide me with valuable insight to the ideas and lessons that are only available through experiencing a completely new culture. Similarly, Service Engagement is very important to my future plans, as serving others is a fundamental job of those in the medical field. I plan on volunteering at the James Cancer Research Hospital in order to gain experience with helping patients and families, even if it is just being a smiling face that shows them how to navigate the hospital.
The area of Leadership is going to be the largest challenge to incorporate because I am not naturally the type of person to instantly step up and take charge of a situation. this characteristic is especially  important because man and women in the medical field have to constantly make big decisions and act as the authority on cases. In order to become a better leader, I plan to get involved in research and eventually conduct my own research. It would also be valuable experience for me to plan a service activity or some other kind of event in order to get used to leading a group of people.
