Year in Review

My first year of college was exactly what I expected it to be- a learning experience. In high school, I took a lot of the same science classes I am taking now. I came into college thinking that because I had already taken these classes, I would have an easy time taking them in college. I should have not had this mindset, as my classes turned out to be a lot more challenging than I had imagined! First semester, I struggled to put the time into my studies as I was still adjusting to college. Spending so much time on school work has been a big adjustment for me, but it has made me a better student in the long run. Being in Health Sciences Scholars has made my year significantly better, as I am constantly surrounded by those who push me to be a better person and a better student. The lessons I have learned this year in and outside of the classroom have shaped me into the student I am today, at the end of my freshman year.

S: Service Engagement

Since I was 15 years old, I have coached gymnastics for Westerville Special Olympics. This year, I am proud to say I continued that in order to reach my 20 hours of service for Health Sciences Scholars. While coaching, I help athletes with various physical and intellectual disabilities push themselves to achieve their personal goals in gymnastics. This experience has been so rewarding to me and I plan on continuing to coach for many years. Coaching Special Olympics has been about so much more than just getting service hours for me and I will always be grateful I have had the opportunity to be involved with this for so long.

About Me

Hi there! My name is Alison Benner and I am a first year student here at Ohio State. I was born and raised a Buckeye since I live just down the road in Westerville, Ohio. I am currently majoring in Pre-Nursing with hopes to become a nurse practitioner in the future. I have a special interest in developmental disabilities stemming from my involvement in the Westerville Special Olympics program. Alongside participating in the sport of gymnastics myself, I have been coaching special olympics gymnastics since 2015. When not doing school work I love to hangout with my friends and spend time with my family. Go Bucks!
