Single Story Artifact

scholar single story

This artifact is an essay on a single story about a stereotype I had about college before it started. This essay explains how we can be closed-minded and be unaware of what the college experience is actually like. It is important that we go into new places and situations with an open mind and no pre-judgements. It is vital that individuals are able to go into new experiences willing to take in new information and change their approach to them.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. This artifact is my group’s UN Millennium Goal presentation on Maternal Healthcare. This presentation showed the progress that the UN has made to decrease deaths relating to maternal healthcare and ways that we can help. Also, this presentation taught individuals about the problems in other countries, so that they can gain a global awareness and understand how they can help make a difference.

Also, the UN Millennium Goal presentation opens students’ eyes to the standards of living in countries around the world and bring attention to global issues that may shock some people. This was a great project that allowed the group to research in depth a goal in a region of the world and relay that information to the rest of the class, so that they can learn about these topics too.

About Me

My goal is to become an ESL teacher or continue on to Law school to gain a degree to become an International Adoption Attorney. I plan on majoring in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in the College of Education and Human Ecology. In the summer of 2013, I volunteered at Jewish Vocational Services in Boston, where I worked individually with refugees from all over the world to teach them English and job skills. I loved being able to see the progression the students made throughout the summer, and I want to continue teaching and helping others. I have always been passionate about community service and giving back and I hope to continue this during my time at Ohio State and beyond. I am from Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Maryland. My father’s family is from Israel, so I am used to thick accents and falafel and I am passionate about immersing myself in other cultures and truly experiencing different lifestyles.
