Division D: Meeting Minutes

Class 1

Wednesday: January 10th, 2018

Members Present: Britton McMullen, Devraj Patel, Brian Glen, David Scheatzle

The group discussed the general direction of the aev project and came up with a list:

  • Minimalize everything: each piece should be added deliberately
  • No propellers
  • Forward and reverse
  • One engine
  • Emphasis on coding

This was the group’s initial ideas on the project. There are no impending group tasks to complete.

Class 2

Friday: January 19th, 2018

Members Present: Britton McMullen, Devraj Patel, Brian Glen, David Scheatzle

The group started working on pR&D ( preliminary research and development) Lab 1 and 2. A system with propellors, the Arduino Nano board, and the coding software on Brian’s laptop was used to program and test the motor functions. The lab went well as Division D continues to work on becoming familiar with the interfaces and design process. Overall, a successful get together is concluded.

Class 3

Friday: January 26th, 2018

Members Present: Britton McMullen, Devraj Patel, Brian Glen, David Scheatzle

Today, the squad tackled building a prototype AEV. The design was presented by Brian Glen. Together, the group went over the design to decide on the details. Tape was to be used as often as possible to make the device lighter. L-brackets are sturdy, but can weigh the object down unnecessarily. The body is of two plastic plates which hang from an L-plate. This way the device can be minimal while still holding all the integral pieces closely. The motor was programmed to test the strength of the propellers against the weigh of the vehicle. Although D’s device was not tested on the track, another AEV caused an accident. Nothing was damaged. However, the other Division was given a fine to make an example for the other groups. Lessons were learned on both ends of the crash. Also our design was different from the prototype that was given to us. We as a group felt that we could experiment and get more valuable information from our own design.

Class 4

Friday: February 2nd, 2018

Members Present: Britton McMullen, Devraj Patel, David Scheatzle

Earlier today, team D met to complete the preliminary R&D labs. Lab five was based on scoring and screening the current prototype. The worksheet was completed with the current design scoring slightly higher than the reference score. However, this means doesn’t mean much as the process is not nearly complete. The categories of safety, and durability need to be improved drastically. The group also went over lab four to learn how to use the analysis tool properly. The software will become more applicable as improvements are made to the device. Practice makes perfect.
