The Nursing Choice

Hello everyone! My name is Karlie and in order to tell you why I chose to become a nurse I first need to tell you about myself.

I grew up very close to all my aunts and uncles, who are all younger than my mom, which means their kids are much younger than me, which means I was the babysitter. I am the oldest of 14, and the next oldest is 8 years younger than me, so I was also the ONLY babysitter.  But I can’t complain, babysitting has been a summer job for me since before I was old enough to get a real job, and I loved doing it. Babysitting showed me how much I loved caring for others.

When I was 15 my parents bought the local bar and restaurant in town and I soon got my first real job working there in the kitchen and eventually as a waitress when I was old enough. I was really good at this job and my coworkers appreciated me because I was a hard worker and I never wanted to be treated as the boss’s daughter. For anyone that’s every waited tables or worked in a kitchen on weekend nights, (at one of the few places to eat in town) you would understand how crazy this job can be. This job taught me how to juggle a billion tasks at one time while making sure to give my best service and full attention to all my customers.

Nurses must work be able to work hard and think clearly even during the busiest times, while delivering quality care to all of their patients. Nursing was not my original major when I started college and, honestly, it wasn’t even an option I had considered. One day when stressing about a hard class for my previous major I had the realization that I am not enjoying myself, and I had never felt excited for my post graduation career. After lots of thinking (and many phone calls to my mom) it soon became clear that I was meant to be a nurse. All these skills listed above, and many more that I possess, add up to make a great nurse. I knew nursing was for me because when I first said aloud “I think I want to be a nurse,” I smiled.

I still smile every time I tell someone that I am going to the school I love to fulfill my calling in life, becoming a nurse.
