Paint filter issue and a solution

Hi all! Maybe you had a similar experience this week with the bee survey paint filters? The filter paper is rather flimsy, and was nearly disintegrated by the time I finished picking up my bowl contents.

If you put the paper filter inside a coffee filter before you empty your bowls, this should suffice to gather your catch. Just let the soapy water drain through, then fold the two together and put them in the week’s ziploc bag. Cone or basket filter should work.

  1. When collecting my bees I too got a long hole in the filter. I was able to hold it together until I finished and put it in the plastic bag. I will try putting it in the coffee filter next week. Pat Dutton

  2. Thank you for the heads up! It’s been either too cool or too rainy up north here but things look promising for this week – give me some time to find my coffee filters !

  3. Hello!

Happy to be out and about with the bees!

Is it OK to use this old plastic cone filter/coffee filter I had to support the paper paint filter instead? The water drains through both and the paint filter provides more support and stability when pouring the water contents through it. The paint filter maintains its integrity to the end as I was able to fold it and put it in the ziplock bag in the freezer with the info sheet as instructed. Can I continue to use this method?

Also, 3 of the cups disappeared and are nowhere to be seen. How do I go about getting some more to replace these?

Hmm – can’t seem to submit the photo…

  4. Thanks for the information. Due to weather, I haven’t been able to do a collection yet. Looks like my best bet next week is Saturday. The weather report says rain every day Monday thru Friday.

  5. Too wet here. Rained every day at some point, and not looking too promising for the next couple of days either.

  6. We too saw weakening with the paint strainer. I think we will try and gently empty all cups in a container and then put that whole container through the paint strainer one time when we are back inside.
