ABET(4): Communication

Communicating effectively is very important to the success of an idea or project.  Memos, proposals, and research papers are the three types of documents I will be preparing regularly in my future career.  I will also have to prepare oral presentations and communicate information effectively in those.  An oral presentation in my future career would involve presenting ways to increase production, information on package changes and information on future projects.

The type of audience that would be listening to the my oral presentation would be other employees to the company.  Assuming that the information would include financial planning or safety of product the presentations could also be towards the general public as well.  The communication for the employees inside the company would be academic while the communication for the general public would be easier to read and make sense with less jargon.  My appreciation of quality communication skill has stayed the same during my engineering studies here at Ohio State.  I have learned different technical writing skills which have helped me understand the importance of communicating effectively.

The assignment I have selected for ABET (4) Communication is a memo written to a professor here at Ohio State.  The purpose of this assignment was to learn how to write a memo effectively.  The purpose of this memo is to relay an overview of Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth and how he used rhetoric to portray his information on global warming.  Learning how to write a memo helped me learn to communicate effectively with employees later on in my career.  This is just one example of the technical writing completed during that semester.  Each different assignment had to be written to a different audience.  The class and this assignment demonstrate that I can effectively communicate with different technical writing to a wide range of audiences.  Below you will find the attached memo.
