PUBAFR 6510, Conveying Quantitative Data in Public Affairs, was a one-hour half-semester course on how to use Tableau to convey interesting and complicated data. Tableau has a steep learning curve, but it is very powerful. This TED talk by Hans Rosling shows how data visualization can change how people see statistics.
As part of the course, I completed case studies of how data is presented by two government agencies: New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Ohio Legislative Services Commission. I also did a final project writing a tutorial for how to create climate opinion maps such as those by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.
