Year in Review

Global Awareness: To develop my global awareness I have arranged to go on a study abroad trip this May. I was accepted into the History of WWII Study Abroad Program in which I will visit England, France, Germany, and Poland, and stay for a week after the program to visit Italy and Ireland. During the program, I will visit sites specifically related to WWII history but also other touristy sites that allow me to see more of each country. I plan to continue to work toward this goal by traveling more in the future and expanding my knowledge of different cultures.

Original Inquiry: I joined an a cappella group this year on campus, Sound of Science, and in this organization, I am able to let loose my creativity and passion for music. I have helped to arrange different pieces that our group sings and have been a participant in our planning process. I will continue to do this by staying involved in music programs at OSU and after college.

Academic Enrichment: My honors contract demonstrates my commitment to the goal of Academic Enrichment by ensuring that all of my General Education, Major, and Minor classes are honors level or above in their rigor to better prepare me for future coursework throughout my undergraduate career and beyond. I also chose my specific GEs and Major/Minor through thinking of what I truly enjoy to learn about because the only way I will get the most out of a class is to take classes in which I am genuinely engaged and passionate. To be perfectly honest, I do not know exactly what I want to do in the future, but I am passionate about science and microbiology and would like to obtain my degree in something I truly enjoy to learn about. My career ideas now include professional health careers like a physical therapist and physician’s assistant in addition to the possibility of becoming a social worker.

Leadership Development: I am a peer mentor in the honors program, a member of Sound of Science a cappella, a recently initiated member of Alpha Omicron Pi at OSU, and a member services assistant at the RPAC. These contribute to my development as a leader because as I fulfill my role in each group, I take responsibility for a certain function or aspect of the greater goal of the group, allowing me to contribute to the wellbeing of my activities through my own leadership initiative. I have become much more involved this year and acting as a mentor or older member of a group allows me to take on more responsibilities that allow my organizations to be successful. My personal goal throughout college is to discover and refine my strengths that I can carry over to my future career, and I believe that I am achieving this by giving my all to serve in my organizations.

Service Engagement: I do various service projects throughout the year, the most recent one being a volunteer on MLK, Jr. Day in which I helped the outreach department at SARNCO sort supplies to help raise awareness of the community programs available to victims of sexual assault and violence. In addition, I joined AOII this semester and have been involved in many of their philanthropic events, of which they focus on the Arthritis Foundation. I plan to continue to engage in the community by continuing to help with service projects throughout my time at OSU in order to give back to the community that supports our education.

Global Awareness: During my four years at Ohio State, I plan to advance my growth as a global citizen by traveling to new places and studying different cultures through my history minor. I would like to travel to Ireland or Greece to study abroad one summer, in order to learn about ancient cultures’ ideas and values. In addition, in history classes, I will be able to compare cultures of the world to my experiences to be able to have a more open and accepting mind about differences in our world.

Original Inquiry: Original Inquiry is the formation of unique and individual thoughts and conclusions, and is important because it encourages creativity and innovation. I will try to achieve this by engaging in research in the Microbiology department. I hope that through this, I will be able to find new information and formulate new theories to be able to affect the direction of research and studies of diseases today.

Academic Enrichment: I am in the honors program so that I can take the most challenging and intensive courses available in my major. I am very interested in the health field right now and would like to pursue a career in nursing, such as becoming a nurse practitioner. I intend to be working around diseases and be studying the production of new treatments throughout my academic career, and so I chose to major in microbiology in order to further my knowledge of microorganisms. With this, I will be able to have a more extensive knowledge of diseases and certain properties when in comes to research and patients in the future. I also chose the medical humanities and history minors because I wanted to have some humanities experience to balance the science – I want to have good people skills as well as good scientific skills. I am most excited about taking my anthropology and psychology GE courses because I love the mixture of social science with biological science. I love how the two coexist and interact with one another to create an interesting balance. I am going to take over 121 credit hours throughout my four years at Ohio State because I believe that some of the extra classes I will take are as necessary as the classes for my major in order to prepare me for my future schooling and career. This demonstrates my commitment as I attempt to supersede requirements to focus on a thorough academic background.

Leadership Development: In order to demonstrate leadership in college, I hope to accomplish a few things. First, this summer, I would like to earn my CNA certification in order to be able to start working as a CNA and gain nursing experience. I would also like to get involved in research by possibly getting a summer internship in Washington, D.C. where new and different opportunities are available to me, closer to my home town. I am currently a part of the A Kid Again organization and would like to become more involved in the runnings of the organization. I would also like to join the Boo Radley society and other charitable organizations in order to be more involved in my community by spreading good spirit and kindness through small actions.

Service Engagement: I am currently involved with the A Kid Again organization where we attend events to support activities for families with kids who have terminal illnesses. We plan game nights and fun events for the kids and their families so that they may be “a kid again” for a night when they are away from the harsh realities they face everyday. I would also like to explore the Boo Radley society and other community service organizations focusing on working with kids and animals. I truly enjoy helping children and would love to become more involved with role model and tutoring programs in Columbus. I have always had a passion for helping others and cannot wait to find out what other opportunities Ohio State has for me to find my place on campus.
