Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

What are my GOALS? To be completely honest, I’m not entirely sure yet, but I do have a general idea. As I come up with more, I shall edit my thoughts in, but for now, these are the guidelines for my GOALS thus far:

Global Awareness: As some may know, I am majoring in zoology and doing pre-vet. Thus, my global awareness involves traveling to learn the diversity of various species of animals which I may not get to interact with or observe in their true habitats while living in the United States. Therefore, I plan to possibly do some study abroad to Australia or Africa so I may be able to visit and observe the animals that run wild there and learn about the people who protect and care for their safety. If I can find one, I may also do some trips involving veterinarian help in foreign countries, but I haven’t heard of much information concerning this yet.

Original Inquiry: For my endeavors in original inquiry, I hope to do some research involving animals in shelters or in wildlife rehabilitation centers in order to find out more about how these animals live their lives and how we as a community can improve the lives of these animals and keep the general public informed. Being able to get more animals out of shelters and into more loving homes would be the best possible result out of researching in this area.

Academic Enrichment: Academic enrichment is actually pretty easy for me. I know I want to take as many courses as I can that will interest me in my field and actually teach me information that’ll become useful for me in the future. I will also be seeking internships, research opportunities, or part-time jobs that’ll allow me to interact with animals and learn more about how they function and how they should be treated.

Leadership Development: In order to achieve leadership development, I am going to have to work hard to be the best that I can be. I want to be a role model when it comes to keeping my morals and values high so I can be looked up to, and not looked down upon. If possible, I also hope to maybe one day lead the percussion section of one of the Ohio State University bands, or perhaps became a leader at at least one of the jobs that I will work at throughout my years at OSU.

Service Engagement: I believe that doing service is one of the easiest and most fun things I can do, especially in my field of work, as long as I can find the time to do so. I really want to be able to volunteer at animal shelters, vet clinics, and wildlife rehabilitation centers in order to benefit these creatures lives and enrich the lives of those in our community. So far, I’ve found one club, the Zoology Club, which I hope can help me achieve this goal next semester, as they volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center called Butternut Farms.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Hello Everyone! If you are reading this, then you are probably trying to figure out who I am. As a person, I am an animal lover. There’s a definite fact, and that’s why I am pursuing a major in Zoology, and am also going into Pre-Vet Medicine. I’ve had many pets, including fish, rats, cats, and dogs. I’ve even taken care of a few Purple Martin fledglings in my backyard in Texas, my previous home to here. I am also a huge band fan. I’ve been playing percussion, the drums, since I was in fourth grade and managed to make it to the position of the Head Percussion leader my senior year of high school, and I don’t plan on stopping while here at Ohio State. For now, I’m joining the athletic band, where I look forward to watching hockey games that I so miss watching when I was in Alaska and New York. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to march with our marching band though, as I’ve admired them since the moment I discovered them in high school. Now, you may have noticed that I mentioned many states above, and that’s because I’m a military child, so I’ve lived in many places, including Virginia and Hawaii. Because of this, I’ve found it increasingly difficult to find and keep friends, but I try my best with what’s given to me. I’m also fairly shy, and prefer to listen to others rather than talk myself, and I sometimes have trouble hearing and saying things correctly.

As a learner, I prefer hands-on learning. I can’t do just listening, because all the words mix together in my head and I end up forgetting things, and I have trouble with just visual as I get easily distracted or may not understand something and have difficulty expressing what I find to be confusing. If I had to choose one over the other, I’d choose visual learning, but incorporating both or allowing me to physically work with something helps me immensely. I also tend to work well with a little white noise, but if it gets too loud, then I can’t focus well. I can also work well alone or in groups, depending on the assignment.

That’s all I can think of for now, but I will update this whenever a new thought comes to mind. So hopefully you learned something about me and found this to be helpful!

Until next time,
