Second Year Service Project: Goodwill Columbus

I achieved my service hours in a variety of mediums this year. My first and personally most impactful event was the Day of Service in Columbus. Traveling to a primary school with other HSS students, we were able to complete a multitude of refurbishments to the school. These included creating a new garden area for the students to grow fresh fruits and vegetables, giving classrooms a facelift, and fixing up the playground. This experience was very impactful because it reminded me that while I am attending a top tier university, not all children have equal access to the same education. Volunteering at this school helped me do  just a little bit to help this problem. I also had the opportunity to go back to my old high school and be a speaker at an event in which current high school students learn about the college experience and how to prepare for it. I remember how daunting it was to go off to college so being able to help calm some fears in other students was very fullfilling.

I also volunteered as a coach at a Lil Kickers soccer camp in my area. This was very enjoyable because as a former soccer player it was amazing to see young kids so enthusiastic about the game! Being able to pass on my knowledge of the sport to up and coming players was the least I could do after gaining so many positive experiences from the sport. Soccer does not receive the same attention as football or baseball does in the United States, so helping kids become enamored with the game is huge for the sport.

To finish out my service hours I volunteered at Lincoln-Way Christian Church to prepare meals to send to underprivileged villages in Africa. These meals were prepared with all the essential nutrients that people in Africa may not necessarily recieve. While I may not worry about where my food comes from everyday, some people do so it was nice to be able to make a difference.

I completed my second year service project through serving 40 hours at the local Goodwill on North High Street. I was responsible for assisting the sorting of donations as they came to the store and overall upkeep of the store.
