G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc.
  • Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
  • Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
  • Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
  • Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

 

So far in my experiences at OSU, I have been thoroughly involved in the G.O.A.L.S. areas of Leadership Development and Service Engagement.  In regards to Leadership Development, I am actively involved with Collegiate 4-H, in which I help plan and lead outreach and training programs, as well as serve as a counselor and instructor at camps and conferences.  Service Learning has always been an important aspect of my life, and it continues to be here in Columbus.  So far, I have been engaged in community service with Equality Ohio through Students for Diversity in Education through Service, as well as by donating personally crocheted items to Star House for homeless youth.  This coming spring, I intend on becoming dedicated to the G.O.A.L.S. area of Original Inquiry, as I plan on being involved with research at the Ornamental Plant Germplasm Center here at OSU.

CAREER

Biological Sciences Scholars trip to Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

At this event, I was able to partake in a behind the scenes tour of the manatee exhibit and learn more about conservation efforts regarding manatees in coastal Florida.  This experience affirmed my passion for sustainability and ensuring that our world not be depleted of its natural resources.

ARTIFACTS

The United Nations reports that by 2050, there will be over 9 billion people in the world. There are currently around 7.5 billion people in the world, and one out of every nine people do not get enough food. My passion for environmental science stems from wanting to help meet the food and fiber needs of our growing population while ensuring the earth’s wellbeing for future generations. I hope to contribute to sustainable production and growth through studying Environmental Science at Ohio State University to learn about biological process on the molecular level and how they can be improved to more efficiently provide for the human population.

ABOUT ME

Hello!  My name is Spencer Bauman, and I am a first year student at OSU studying environmental science.  I am from a rural area of Southern Ohio, where my family raises tobacco, corn, soybeans, and about 300 head of registered angus cattle.  I have always been very diversified in my pursuits, being extremely devoted to my academics, many clubs and organizations, and volunteering efforts.  While at OSU, I hope to become involved in meaningful research regarding molecular genetics to further myself as well as the scientific community.
