Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Artifacts

An artifact that is important to me is my watch. This watch isn’t your normal birthday or christmas gift – It’s special to me for a different reason.

watchartifact

I was given this watch as a senior gift for my high school track team. In 10th grade I joined my school’s spring track team, and ran cross country and track for the rest of my time in high school. Balancing three sport seasons per year and school was difficult, but it contributed dramatically to my ability to persevere as a student and as a person outside of school. I wear this watch daily as a reminder of where I came from, and of the fact that a good student balances their work with the other elements in their life.

Another artifact that is important to my learning is my weekly planner. It is essential to my academic success, and representative of my academic strengths and weaknesses.

Planner

One of my weaknesses in academics is management. I struggle with mentally keeping track of all of my assignments and exams, especially now that I’m in college. Luckily, one of my strengths is organization. A way I stay organized and get around my lack of management is through my weekly planner. Every Sunday I sit down for 10 to 15 minutes to fill out my planner with all of my tests, homework assignments and important classes that I have to prepare for. This helps me keep track of all my obligations and greatly improves my time management.

Charlie Barton

First Year Engineering Student, Humanitarian Engineering Scholar

Hello! My name is Charlie Barton and I am a Freshmen here at Ohio State majoring in Engineering (undecided pre-major). I come from Downingtown PA, a suburb outside of Philadelphia. I am very excited to be a Humanitarian Engineering Scholar this year, and to be involved in the opportunities for service and learning that the program offers. My hobbies include running playing soccer,  both of which I participated in heavily in high school. Go Bucks!

Five of my most prominent strengths are Adaptability, Consistency, Competition, Strategic and Command. Adaptability describes my ability to adjust my habits and behavior to different situations. Consistency shows how I keep my habits and behavior the same if the situation I am in does not change. Competition is a strength of mine that highlights how I always want to be skilled and competent in what I do, and compare myself to others often. The Strategic strength means that I find creative ways to solve my problems, and approach situations with analysis and an eye for patterns. Finally, Command is a strength that demonstrates my ability to be a leader and persuade people to follow me.
