Sophomore Year in Review

Global Awareness: So far at Ohio State, I have taken multiple classes that have taught me about the world outside the United States, from classic Greek Literature to modern European history and ancient Roman history. These classes have definitely broadened my worldview as a kid from Ohio who is now going to school in Ohio who hasn’t spent much time outside of the country. However, the biggest event when it comes to my global awareness will surely be the study abroad program I am going on as one of the Global May options offered by Ohio State. I can’t express how excited I am to go on this trip, and I believe immersing myself in a different culture can really give me some new perspective when it comes to the world as a whole.

Original Inquiry: As of yet, I have participated in any research either during the school year or over the summer, but I think I plan on doing it at some point. I am always getting emails about people looking for computer science students to help with research projects since we have a lot of utility. Looking ahead in my major program, one of the courses I plan to take is a project course, CSE 3902, based around building a game myself and I get a chance to use my creativity and make a game that I want to make and am excited about. Another class that should give me an opportunity to flex my creative muscles is the capstone project, CSE 5911. This class seems very open-ended and should let me build a project that I can be proud of when I graduate.

Academic Enrichment: I chose my major, CIS, because it allowed me to get a degree in computer science but also to explore more of the liberal arts when compared to the engineering equivalent, CSE. I also plan to pursue a minor in business, and the additional flexibility offered by the CIS major allows me an easier route to graduating with a computer science degree as well as a business minor. I chose my GEs to give me the largest variety of topics covered that I could and I tried to pick subjects that were somewhat interesting to me so I would be more motivated to learn in the class, such as German 3254H, a holocaust film studies class. I am a huge fan of movies, so a class about analyzing films seems like a pretty good time to me. I also don’t shy away from tough classes, as I chose to take a 3000-level german class instead of an easier but less engaging option that I could have chosen.

Leadership Development: As of now, I have no idea what my leadership development will involve, but I know I want to be involved in something. I am part of Block O since I am a huge sports fan, and I have gone to a few Mountaineering Club meetings but have not thrown myself into anything quite yet. I also plan to join a club relating to coding, maybe one that works with local communities or something like that.

Service Engagement: Speaking of a coding club that works with communities, I think that would also fit very well as a service activity that uses my skills to help others. Additionally, A lot of my service work at my high school revolved around sports, especially basketball, so maybe I will find myself involved with something like that at some point at OSU.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: Next semester, I will be taking Comparative Studies 2607.08 which deals with how the rest of the world sees America. I think this should provide me some insight into the differences between how we as Americans view our country compared to what everybody else thinks of our country. Additionally, although I have no concrete plans at the moment, I do plan to study abroad at some point in college, most likely on one of the May outings offered by the school. I see studying abroad as a fantastic opportunity to see different parts of the world, as well as engage with other cultures on a more grounded and day to day basis than can be offered by any classroom.

Original Inquiry: I find myself unsure at this point in my academic career as to where I will find my original inquiry. However, I find both research and creative productions to be very viable options, especially considering my major’s (CIS) ability to have classes where you can create games or something similar. If I decide to do research, finding an opportunity in computer programming should not be very difficult, and could be very useful beyond school.

Academic Enrichment: I chose my major, CIS, because it allowed me to get a degree in computer science, which I definitely want, but also to explore more of the liberal arts when compared to the engineering equivalent, CSE. Additionally, my major allows me to have a related field, for which I think I will choose business, to add to my computer science degree. In terms of GE courses I look forward to, I think Classics 2220H could be very interesting because I have always enjoyed mythology, so I think studying those myths could be fun. Overall, my courses are generally all difficult courses designed to help me improve and learn over the course of my time at OSU.

Leadership Development: As of now, I have no idea what my leadership development will involve, but I know I want to be involved in something. I’m sure I will find a club at some point that I feel passionate about, and I believe that will help with my leadership skills.

Service Engagement: I am not currently involved in any service opportunities at Ohio State. However, I do plan to get involved at some point, although I am not sure how. A lot of my service work at my high school revolved around sports, especially basketball, so maybe I will find myself involved with something like that at some point at OSU.

Discussion Question For Survey #4

Identify one aspect of your life that has changed over the past few months, and discuss how that change has taken place, and how you want to continue your personal development over the rest of your undergraduate experience.

One aspect that has changed significantly over the course of the past few months is my increased responsibility over myself and especially over my time management. Before leaving for college, most of my time was governed by school and sports, and whether it was the amount of time I spent in school itself, working on homework at home, or going to mandatory practices for sports every day, I’ve never had a lot of time where I had the freedom to chose what I wanted to do. Now, at Ohio State, I spend about two to three hours a day at class, a far cry from the seven to eight hours a day I would spend at school in high school. This leaves much more time for me to use how I choose, and I have begun to learn how to juggle the homework from those classes along with studying for tests and quizzes while also having enough time to unwind and enjoy myself. When I arrived here, I had next to zero experience with finding that balance, as most of my time had been dictated for me before college. Therefore, I had to figure out on my own how to accomplish all my goals in all facets of my life on my own, which is a larger responsibility, but I very much enjoy the freedom that comes along with it. Additionally, I feel very confident in my ability to handle all the changes to my everyday life, and as I transition into living off campus and eventually on my own later in life, I think I will be ready to take on whatever life throws at me.
