What does it mean to you?

Understanding how to utilize and value the resources around you can enhance your overall experience as a student. Learning how to manipulate the resources of your choice also play a huge role in your overall success with these resources. A few things I have picked up over the semester regarding my use of technology and online tools and resources include learning how to effectively use search engines to which search engines specifically to use for the job at hand. This helps tremendously when you have close to a million results being returned.

An example would be using quotations in your search. This tells the search engine to search for exactly those search words. Or did you know that Google has calendars and time trackers that assist you in time management? Pretty cool stuff. So you can narrow down your search, you can find way better information to use and you could probably shave down the amount of time you spend on the overall assignment.

This summer I have spent much of my time with my head in a book, or doing assignments online. It was not a fun summer, but a good enough one for me. I have learned that I have to dedicate myself to the goals I want to achieve and not worry about everyone else and what they are pursuing. It took a lot of dedication and will to give up my summer but I am  hoping that I can help make the life of a fellow student a bit easier through my blogs. I learned that I can do anything I put my mind to.

My most meaningful experience in EPSY 1159 was just learning some useful ways to navigate the internet a bit better and learning some tactics for manipulating search engines. I’ve spent numerous hours fighting with Google because I don’t know how to efficiently use it. I also really enjoyed creating a blog. This is a way to help other students, or whoever can benefit. I feel as if I am helping out in a small way, and this is a good way to give back to the university. It is a voice for myself and I enjoyed composing these blogs. It was almost unreal, like I get to do this for a grade?

I immediately began applying what I learned in this class to my life in other areas. I took other summer classes so it was cool to use what I learned here in my other classes. As for the future I feel the tools acquired from this class will be utilized the same way they are now. I will continue to hone them in so that I can continue to learn how to be more and more efficient. With so much new technology and the internet growing so rapidly, it’s key that I stay up-to-date with the online tools and resources available.

Overall, this is a great course. One course that supplies you as a student with useful life tools you can employ in your everyday life. I think every college student should take this course.

Searching and Researching

During college you are almost guaranteed at one point or another to research a topic and write a essay about it. Seems simple enough, until you get on the Google website and return a search of about a million results. What is a student to do with all of this power?

First, learning how to manipulate your terminology can drastically alter your search results. Try finding the best, most appropriate terms for your search. One of the main causes of an unsuccessful search is due to improper search words. Play around with it until you find the information you are looking for. Also, once you find the correct terms putting them in quotations will allow you to search for those exact terms.

Second, pay attention to the sources you are utilizing. Pay attention to url’s, and the credibility of the sources you are utilizing. Is the author credible? Is the source up-to-date? Using  bad source will only make your job that much harder. By finding valuable sources this will make researching your topic actually enjoyable and educational.

Searching and researching a topic can be annoying, but if you take into consideration these two tips it doesn’t have to be. Make your college experience simple by employing these tips, and never using bad, uncredible sources.

Web-Enhanced reading and study strategies

As a college student you always hear about how there are such great resources out there on the internet. As good as it sounds we are still so reluctant to try them because we honestly don’t have as much free time as our professors like to think we do.  In recent years, and even months it has become easier to access resources that can enhance our study strategies and reading accomplishments.

In order to find what works best for you, you have to first understand your preferred way of learning, and reading , and acquiring knowledge. Personally, I don’t enjoy reading, and I don’t have the best study habits. So before I  even begin to devote any time to searching for resources to help alleviate the pain, I give up.  I never understood why these resources I desperately seemed out weren’t more easily accessible.

More than ever as of late, I am finding it easier and easier to log onto osu.edu, or even a search engine such as bing or Google and see advertisements for resources college students would lust over. As stated earlier it is crucial to understand your style of learning and what you enjoy doing. This will shape your search and help you hone in on the job you do at finding the necessary resources for ultimate success in an academic setting. Don’t make it tough on yourself, we as college students have it hard enough!

Refletion post

The use of technology to communicate and collaborate on academic projects has come a very long way and is super beneficial to society and academic purposes alike. Technology allows us to not only create new and amazing works, but also share them with numerous amounts of audiences at minimal amounts of time.

Technology allows us to organize our lives with the help of technological tools, as well as better plan for our futures. Technology allows us to be extremely accurate with the information we bring in and send out. As well as allowing us to educate ourselves or others with the use of virtual classrooms and such.

Students can create virtual study groups that don’t require us to meet face to face, and allow us to check in to the study group when convenient for us without missing any important material. Everything is transcribed and we have electronic receipts of all information exchanged.

Technology broadens the scope of education and improves on simplistic practices currently in use. It makes education and information available on all ends of the spectrum with increasingly more accuracy.  I believe technology will get better and better until we eventually have to reconstruct our current academic systems. There will be some downfalls, but this will be a great advancement for students and professors alike.

A few tips for the typical college student

For most college students the college lifestyle takes some adjusting to. Many of us had a different high school experience and try to equate the same effort into our college careers. Lets be honest, it simply doesn’t cut it here at The Ohio State University. I am a fifth year graduating senior and want to give the upcoming, or currently enrolled college student a few tips that I find make life as well as school a bit more manageable.

First, get involved. There are thousands of others in the same position as you. Leaving home, away from friends and family, in a new environment. Team up with other willing individuals and explore all that the university has to offer. There are hundreds of student organizations, clubs, and teams to be apart of. As well as self-initiated student organizations that may be less formal if you would like. There are many amazing people that are in the same boat and looking for new friends so get involved and make your life easier.

Second, be sure to manage your time effectively. Being away from mom and dad’s busy schedule will open up a lot of free time that you never noticed you had. Make sure to be doing prosperous activities with this free time. It is easy to neglect responsibilities and fall into bad habits.

Third, do not be afraid to work hand-in-hand with professors. Believe it or not professors love when you are involved, ask questions, and take control of your academic destiny. They are way more willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if you are actively communicating with them. This is a key tip. This will make your life extremely less stressful if you establish relationships with professors.

College is a fun time, but should also be taken serious is many aspects. Small but powerful actions such as these discussed previously are miniscule in effort but will reap tremendous benefits for you the student.
