Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement.

Global Awareness:

During my time at Ohio State, I hope to become involved in clubs and groups around campus that expand my knowledge on different cultures around the world. My first semester at OSU involved a study abroad course focused on the culture and diversity associated with the city of London. Over winter break following my first semester, I explored the culture and diversity of London first-hand by traveling to the city with a class of my peers and OSU faculty members. To stay involved in global awareness during my time at OSU, I also want to pursue research abroad in my field of study, COVID-19 permitting. Otherwise, I plan to take courses that expand my knowledge about the world around me.

Original Inquiry:

I joined Prof. Bern Kohler’s physical chemistry group my second semester at OSU, and I hope to stay involved in research until I graduate. I work within the subgroup that focuses on studying melanin, with a focus on studying a project that focuses on the disassembly of polydopamine. Eventually, I hope to participate in internships and research projects outside of OSU to get more breadth in my experience in the field of chemistry. Further, I hope to participate in conferences and gain more independence in the lab through more personalized projects before I graduate.

Academic Enrichment:

I hope to one day use my chemistry degree to make leading advancements in projects that can help improve the world as a whole. This could involve solar energy, medical research, and many other specifications. I chose chemistry due to its widespread applicability and I hope that one day I can apply the knowledge I obtain through OSU to its full potential. In addition, understanding mathematics is important to most fields and applicable to a large range of aspects of life; however, I added a minor in mathematics to enhance my ability to problem solve more than anything else.

Leadership Development:

I have been a member of numerous organizations and clubs on campus, including Taylor Tower Hall Council as a general body member, Chemistry Club, and Alpha Xi Delta. All of these clubs and organizations have taught me leadership skills, such as understanding the importance of team work and dedication to projects much larger than myself. I have held minor leadership positions in some, but I hope that in the future I can gain more prominent leadership roles to contribute to the organizations more directly. I would like to see my hard work and creativity go towards making these organizations better for future classes.

Service Engagement:

I’m hoping to get more involved in service around the community by joining more clubs in which this is the focus. More specifically, I hope to get involved at soup kitchens or homeless shelters in the area. I am also considering volunteering at local hospitals or joining organizations that provide medical resources to countries in need. However, currently I am part of the sorority Alpha Xi Delta, which has a national philanthropy: Autism Speaks. Through my sorority, I participate in numerous fundraisers and events to support this organization, including walks, races, food events, etc. I was also a volunteer to aid in moving in students to the dorms at OSU at the beginning of both my first- and second-year at OSU.
