Artifact 2

Empty Bowls

This artifact represents the Empty Bowls project I participated in as apart of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program. This project was partnered with the Mid Ohio Food Bank to raise money for the food insecure. As apart of the first year class I helped create and glaze ceramic bowls to be sold during Parent’s Weekend here at Ohio State. Each bowl was sold for $10 and every $10 translated into $110 worth of food for the food pantry. We were so successful with this project and surpassed our goal! We raised over $3,500 worth of food for the Mid Ohio Food Bank. I am grateful to have participated in this experience as it has opened my eyes to really see the need to help those struggling with food insecurity. I have learned that food insecurity effects so many more than I had ever imagined. I am so glad I was able to help contribute to the food bank!

About Me

Hi, my name is Mariah Barboza and I am a first year in the Mount Leadership Society Scholars Program. I am really excited to be here at Ohio State and I look forward to seeing what these next four years have in store for me. I am from Mentor, Ohio which is about 40 minutes from Cleveland. I am majoring in Undecided Engineering and would like to pursue a minor in Spanish. I am not sure if I will stay with my major as I am very interested in going Pre-med. At some point during my time here at Ohio State I would love to study abroad. I love traveling and exploring new places.

Some of the clubs I recently joined are Buckeye Baking club, Salsa club, and I am on the Service Committee for Mount. Throughout high school I was really involved in volunteering, so I am eager to participate in the volunteer opportunities Mount has to offer. When I am not studying, or in clubs, I like to take fun workout classes with my friends, or explore new spots of campus.

Year in Review

Reflecting on this past year I have changed and grown the most I think I ever have in my life. Last year was full of milestones for me, graduating high school, beginning college, and learning to live away from my family for the first time. My journey has been a little rocky, however I feel I have grown so much because of it. Moving away to college was a lot harder for me to go through than I had anticipated. I was very homesick for much of my first semester here at Ohio State. I felt extremely overwhelmed in this new environment while trying to connect with others to make lasting relationships all while juggling and adjusting to my rigorous course load. However, being apart of my scholars program helped ease me into this transition. I feel being apart of Mount really helped give me a sense of community and home. I feel Mount has helped impact my leadership skills as I feel more confident in how I am able to communicate ideas with others when tasked with a problem. I hope to continue to develop my leadership skills this coming semester.

This semester I am also striving to get more involved on campus and better my study skills. Last semester I really struggled in my math and science courses. To help improve my grades and study habits I aim to be better organized as well as utilize all the learning resources available on campus. I feel that I have now learned how I need to prioritize my time in order to do well in my classes this semester. I recently joined CHAARG, which is a fitness community aimed at empowering women through different styles of exercise and fitness. I am excited to be a member of this community and hope it will help me maintain a healthy life style.

Moving away to college has taught me how important family and spending time and connecting with others really is. I value the moments I spend with my friends and family much more now, and hope to continue making deep friendships during my time here at Ohio State. I am ready to take on this new year with the goals to improve my studies, live a healthier life, and cherish the moments spent with loved ones.

Artifacts

This artifact represents my senior project experience. My high school allowed the seniors to go on a project to learn about a profession of interest for the last two weeks of school before graduation. For my senior project I chose to shadow surgery at Tripoint Medical Center in Painesville, Ohio. This was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I shadowed surgery for about 6 hours every day for two weeks. I was able to see at least 10 different surgeries during my time there. The entire surgery staff has taught me so much about their different careers within medicine. I feel I really learned that so much more goes into one operation than meets the eye. I witnessed the hard work and compassion for helping people displayed by the entire surgery staff. By the end of those two weeks I fell in love with surgery! Anatomy and human biology are subjects that I really gravitate towards and has led me to become very interested in pursing a pre-med track here at Ohio State.
