Our Team Goes Above And Beyond

Keri Kopechek, Dream Center Volunteer

On Monday nights, a team of DC staff and volunteers heads out of the building and onto the streets. They take sack meals and water and go searching for homeless and impoverished guests to serve. It began as two people walk down High Street with sack meals. When they saw an individual experiencing homelessness(aka, Dream Center guest), they would offer them a meal. If the guest seemed like they want company, they would say and chat with the guest.

As the team grew, they were able to break up into smaller teams and go both north and south from the Dream Center on High Street. Eventually, the team grew so much they were able to start sending teams beyond High Street.

For the past few months, Keri Kopechek has been part of this servant-hearted and caring team. As the team grows, they can go into more areas of the city and care for more people. Recently, they began to do house calls. This is where a team goes to guests’ homes to check on and talk to them. One Monday, Keri went with a small team to visit Krystal. Krystal is a guest that the Dream Center team has been serving for a while. She recently moved into an apartment but life has been hard and she has been battling bed bugs. “It was hard to hear but sweet to get to encourage and care for her,” Keri said.

After the team had returned to the center and debriefed, one of the senior team members named Anthony went back to Krystal’s house to bring her bedbug fighting chemicals. While the team didn’t want to expose all of them to bedbugs, they were thankful Anthony went back. Keri said she was “So thankful someone could help her fight them.”

The Monday night outreach serves all kinds of people. And Keri loves doing it all. But the team is also made up of all kinds of people. “It feels like a family,” Keri said fondly.  Keri’s and Krystal’s stories are both unique and common around the dream center. It is a place where people care for people. And Keri and Krystal have both seen that first hand.
