Leadership Development

This year, I was able to grow as a leader as I took on new positions within various organizations. Currently, I am a member of the Site Committee for the student organization ENCompass and assist with locating new sites for our organization to expand. Likewise, I also serve as a neuroscience ambassador providing tours for incoming freshman and hosting events for current students. Next year, I begin in my role as the Director of Medical Internships for the neuroscience department,

Global Awareness

This year, I became more globally aware through extensive travel. The last two weeks I had the opportunity to explore Italy and The Netherlands as I visited various world heritage sites and experienced new cultures. Likewise, I leave in 3 weeks for Lucknow, India where I will be living for the next two months as I study Urdu. As a CLS Scholar, I will be immersed in Indian culture and language and expect to gain a solid foundation and appreciation for Eastern cultures.

Academic Enrichment

This year, I took a variety of science courses which really challenged me as a student. It was definitely a new experience getting to take all science courses as I completed coursework in biology, chemistry, and neuroscience. As such, I really believe the coursework I have completed thus far is preparing me well for future profession of medicine.

Service

For my freshman year, I completed over 30 hours of service primarily through the student organization ENCompass. As part of my job, I volunteer at local hospitals and food pantries once a week and consult with low income community members in an effort to address social determinants of health. In addition, I also direct clients to local resources and recommend social programming for those who may be considered food or housing insecure. This experience with ENCompass was truly eye opening, and its crazy to think that we have a multitude of social resources and programming that many of those in need do not know about. I really loved this work and chose to join the sites committee of ENCompass to get more involved with the organization. I plan to continue to be an active member of ENCompass over the next three years as this volunteering was very meaningful to me and I felt like I was making a difference in the Columbus community.

Freshman Year in Review

After completing my freshman year, I think by far one of the most amazing things was how fast the year seem to fly by. Living on my own for the first time was a really interesting experience as I had to mature and learn to be self sufficient on top of studying and balancing classwork. One thing I learned this year was the necessity of having a strong work ethic and regimented schedule in order to balance school and social life. Getting involved with several student organizations such ENCompass and Neuroscience Ambassadors as well as with the fraternity Beta Theta Pi left me on a tight schedule and forced me to prioritize and taught me that I’d make time for things that I was passionate about. As a result, I maintained a great GPA all year and surpassed my original expectations that I had set for myself. While my first semester felt a little bit rocky in terms of getting into the swing of things, I came back for second semester determined to improve upon myself and I feel comfortable in saying I was successful in this pursuit. In addition, a lot of this possible was due to my support structure at school which included great friends that always knew how to motivate me or lift me up when I was down. I’m excited for this summer as I start my research internship on TBI at the Framingham Heart Study as well as volunteer with Project Weber/RENEW.
