First Semester Freshman Year Reflection

I have learned a lot my first semester of freshman year, made many friends and had lots of experiences. I really enjoyed being a part of Biological Sciences Scholars, and all of the interesting events that are available to us. I also have been pursuing a yoga teacher training through OSU Rec Sports, which I will be finishing at the end of the semester. Additionally, I really like being involved in Women in Surgery Club and enjoy all of the service opportunities and unique medical related experiences that it has given me so far. I am very excited to start getting int research and other opportunities next semester.

Year in Review

I went to Cardio Kickboxing for Bio Scholars on September 23rd at the RPAC. I was unable to take a photo at this event due to the fact that it was a physical event and I didn’t have anyone to take it for me that wasn’t doing the event as well. I did really enjoy this event and it helped me learn the meaning of physical and mental determination and hard work.

G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness- Showing an interest in cultivating a relationship to other cultures around the world.  I have always shown a large interest in global awareness with my love for travel and learning about other cultures. In college I hope to study abroad for at least a month, if not a semester, to further develop my cultural knowledge. Additionally, if I end up taking a gap year between undergraduate and medical school, I would love to use it to do research abroad.

Original Inquiry- Honors and Scholars values curiosity and asking questions. This can be manifested in the sense of scientific or other kinds of research.

Academic Enrichment- Honors and Scholars values when their students go above and beyond the academic expectations of the Ohio State curriculum. This not only includes having above average grades and going to Office hours, but also being involved in groups that have an academic focus that is interesting to the student.

Leadership Development- Honors and Scholars places a lot of value in having students with a leadership mindset. This includes engaging in leadership in and outside of the classroom.

Service Engagement- Honors and Scholars values service engagement in their students because it shows that students are working towards a better world in addition to working towards a better version of themselves. All throughout high school, I was involved in many service organizations and I hope to continue this in college. At this point I volunteer once a month with WISE club and hope to go to Bio Scholars volunteering events. Next semester, I hope to volunteer at the James Cancer Center to get more clinical volunteering experience.

This is a photo of my high school graduation diploma and honors. I feel that this is a good representation of what I hope to be in both Bio Scholars and undergraduate in general. The honors sash and 4.0 medal represents Academic Enrichment. The black National Honors Society cord represents Service Engagement and Leadership Development. Finally, the cap and tassel represents my commitment to continue my lifelong journey to learn through Global Enrichment and Original Inquiry while I’m pursuing my bachelor’s degree at The Ohio State University.

About Me

Hi! My name is Elaina Baliner and I am an undergraduate student at Ohio State in the Health Sciences Major from Aurora, Ohio. I am in the Biological Sciences Scholars program and planning on going to medical school after I graduate. I am very interested in science and medicine, some of my disciplinary activities include Humanism in Medicine Club and WISE Club. Additionally, I am passionate about teaching yoga, volunteering, travel, and my fitness group CHAARG. I chose Biological Scholars because I have always been very engaged both in and out of the classroom throughout high school. I felt that Scholars did more work outside of the classroom than in it, which appealed to me. Specifically, I chose Biological Sciences Scholars not only because I am Pre-Medicine, but also because I have a passion for Biology that I would like to better develop outside of the classroom. I am very excited for what is to come in the rest of my undergraduate career.
