My first year of college zoomed by, literally. There were frequently many obstacles I was forced to persevere through, transitioning to college life being one of the biggest. At first it was exciting and euphoric, then it was stressful, however, towards the end of the first semester into the beginning of the second I started to gain my footing and get into the groove of things. Unfortunately, just as I was starting to get into a rhythm, the next time I went back to school was to move all my belongings into a storage unit. Little did I know how quickly this year would fly by. This year is definitely something I will reflect back upon and learn from as well. With that being said, I am very excited for next year now that I’ve got a grasp of what college is like. Furthermore, I made many friends this year coming from all over the globe. Transitioning to remote learning was as hard as transitioning to college. It was a lot harder to learn information and communicating was all the more difficult and prolonged. However, just like all the other obstacles I am forced to persevere through I will do the same with this. I have two more finals coming up and my freshman year will finally be concluded. Ultimately this year was a year of growth and learning, therefore despite the struggles I experienced, it was worth it in the end.
Due to the recent sequence of events, the way I will proceed to go about this project will be altered. I will no longer work with Austin Orozi. I will utilize garage band in order to create a beat to use. In addition, I will also refer to a local sound cloud rapper and friend from high school, to provide guidance and help when needed. Furthermore, I plan to create an a rap song about current events and things pertaining directly to my life. Considering I’ve never wrote or created a song before, I am discovering a new method of expression and art that I have yet to dive into. I plan to utilize my friends tips to create a beat and to add lyrics to completely construct a rap song from nothing.
For this project I will be learning how to create and produce a music track. I will be consulting Austin Oroszi who is known for producing music. Therefore I hope with his experience and my motivation to expand my knowledge throughout music, I hope to create an educational music track. I plan to record and produce in Austin’s studio with the necessary equipment needed to produce a song track.
On Wednesday, November 13th, My peers in the STEM scholars program and I attended a diversity and Inclusion meeting in the Journalism building room 270 from 4:10 to 5:05. I was looking forward to attending the event and was interested as to what was going to be discussed and spoken about. This feeling was not influenced by my own identities or my familiarity with Diversity and Inclusion efforts. I was simply just curious about this topic and was keen to participate in a discussion about it. I learned how to define key terms related to social justice. This consists of; social identity, dominant/ minoritized groups, prejudice, discrimination, oppression, and privilege. Furthermore, I learned how to describe myself and contextualize experiences using social identities as a point of reference. Also I learned how to utilize increased awareness of my identity in order to build healthy relationships with people from different social groups. I think diversity and inclusion has a very big impact on STEM in terms of my classmates and myself on a daily basis. The reason behind this is because from what I have seen so far, The STEM scholars program has brought in great amount of students from various backgrounds and origins and almost everyone is unique in their own way. For example, personally speaking, coming from New York, I have met various people from all over the United States, as well as people from outside the United States. In addition their are many students within the STEM scholars program of different religions as well. This program is very diverse in terms of its students therefore I feel this presentation was ideal and very interesting as it relates to a majority of those that make up this program. In terms of diversity throughout The Ohio State I think there is an ideal amount of it. Everyday when I walk around campus I see a different face everyday, with different ethnicity’s, genders, and religions. I think there is a perfect amount of diversity because there are so many people from different places increasing this University’s wide range of people with unique aspects and skills they bring to the table and share with other students. Not many of my beliefs or assumptions were challenged as I am very accepting to diversity having lived in another country before. The group/ presenter went deep enough into the material and did a very good job at answering questions and elaborating on the presented slides. I think some people may have been afraid of participating in the discussion to begin with however as the presentation went on more and more people began to raise their hand and participate within the discussion. This is a very touchy subject especially throughout today’s current society so I’m sure some people were afraid to offend their fellow peers with certain comments and questions. After the event I was content with the material I learnt and appreciated the discussion I was apart of because throughout society today, diversity and Inclusion is a very big topic especially because people are still being discriminated for who they are.
The first things that popped into my mind when required to visit a non-academic resource was the Ohio State Center for wellness and the Recreational and Physical activity center also known as the RPAC. I decided to attend the student center for wellness. I was aware of these resources but have yet to explore them. Fortunately my roommate and I decided to venture and explore them together. There were two different ways to schedule appointments. One way being via online upon which a form must be filled out and brought to the wellness center. The second way was in person where you will be given a form upon which you must fill out and sign and hand in. Following that there was a wait until your name was called. The student wellness center is designed to support and attack typical problems that a college student may experience and struggle with, whether it be from relationship advice, drug prevention, or even a simple cold. Being a freshmen and adjusting to college is not easy, especially being an engineering major with all the overwhelming work and studying that must be completed. Therefore, my roommate and I felt that it would be a good idea to utilize this campus resource to find solutions to reduce stress and establish efficient routines to get our work done in order to help reduce stress and anxiety and ultimately just be happier. Personally I feel that Ohio State is not lacking any resource as any stress or minor inconvenience the typical college student faces can be helped, solved and supported. There are plenty of facilities, professionals, and resources to utilize to limit stress and just make life easier and a more enjoyable experience for college students. this resource has met all my expectations and does not require any extreme developments. There will always be room for growth whether it is a person or business, therefore yes there are potential areas for growth. An area for growth could perhaps be more professionals or staff to reduce wait time. Furthermore, I was glad this assignment required me to utilize this campus resource as they suggested study habits and alternatives to reduce stress and anxiety. My roommate and I split up and met with separate advisors by ourselves. I was suggested the Pomodoro Technique which is where an individual works consistently for twenty five minute intervals with short breaks in between to rest, and recuperate, and then continue back to doing work or studying for twenty five minutes and the cycle repeats. In addition we further talked about other ways to manage stress and anxiety. The simple things matter as well, things such as just eating healthy, drinking water, and daily exercising helps as well. More specifically the Student Wellness Center has a condom club, Student Civility, HIV and STI testing, Buckeye Peer Access Line, as well as Nutrition coaching. I’m sure throughout my time here at The Ohio State University I will utilize the many resources offered by the Student Wellness Center and take full advantage of them for the better and to ensure I enjoy my college life.
On Monday October 7th I attended the physical chemistry seminar: ” Molecular dynamics simulations of bio molecular crystals”. The speaker is Benjamin G. Levine, a graduate from Michigan st university. I was very excited to attend this event and see what new things I can take away from this and learn from. The seminar took place in room 130 in the Chemical and Bio molecular Engineering and Chemistry building, also known as the CBEC. I attended this event with a few of my peers from my STEM scholars living learning community. I learned that NR recombination occurs at molecule-sized defects and that conical intersections facilitate NR decay in molecules. Although I was confused throughout the seminar as I have yet to learn such a deep aspect of science yet, it was still very interesting. In addition I was able to grasp somewhat of an understanding as to what the speaker was presenting and in a matter of fact made me rather excited to continue to pursue engineering and what other science related topics I am soon to dive into and learn about. Furthermore, I learned about Computing Conical Intersections as well. Despite my confusion in regards to this topic, I learned that the standard method for identifying conical intersections is the state averaged complete active space self- consistent field method. Along with this method is a few challenges associated with it. This challenges consisted of high computational cost, improper scaling of energies with system size, and nonphysical spatial symmetry breaking.To identify and explore the photo physically, relevant regions of the excited state PES we apply AIMD also known as Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease. A mixture of quantum chemical methods ( including highly accurate methods such as EOM-CCSD and CASPT2) to characterize the PES. Fortunately, I was introduced to Dangling Bond dynamics as well and the influence bond angles have. Also, hydrogen terminated SI nano particles have a high photo luminescence quantum yield in addition to strong quantum confinement effects. In addition Oxidized Si Nano particles have a lower photo luminescence quantum yield. Other than my fellow peers, I did not talk or converse with anyone else at the seminar. I did in fact feel out of place because of the material that was being presented and the rest of the audience did seem a lot older. The seminar did meet my expectations as they took a very specific aspect of chemistry and dove very deep in depth within this topic which I found quite interesting the way a specific topic can be elaborated, discussed and researched the way it was. I do think that there is merit to being active in the academic community as an undergraduate student as it can definitely support an help with networking, meeting, and being next to other individuals who share the same interests and passions. Depending on the type of seminar it can be a waste of time because if one were to go to any random seminar it most likely will be pointless as why would one take interest in a seminar they aren’t interested and passionate about. However, if one attends a seminar they are interested in and passionate about it may teach them something they had not already known or even better motivate them to dive deeper and pursue their interests within that field.
The organization I have decided to join was the STEM outreach organization. This organization is made up of a group of other Ohio state university students that create and deliver hands on STEM related projects and experiences to various schools, and libraries. The projects were designed to be taken home by the student. IN addition, the projects were also designed to cost one dollar or less per student. I attended my first STEM outreach event on Wednesday September 11th. It was great experience and I am excited to go again. Some of my fellow scholars also attended. Furthermore, when we first walked in we were greeted with pizza which is always a positive. Following that we then went over what the club is about and what its goals are. We were then fortunate enough to create a homemade flash light. This just so happened to be one of the projects that was going to be presented, and created by the children that the club visited. We were then given the necessary supplies to create this homemade flashlight. We were first given cardboard upon which we had to cut and manipulate into a small box like size. I then cut a small hole for the red light emitting diode (LED) to connect to the rest of the wires inside the box while shining light on the outside. Next, I was given a battery and three copper wires. With the given sandpaper we sanded the burnt edges of the copper wires. using tape I connected one side of one wire to one side of the battery, and then obtained another wire and taped one side from that wire to the other side of the battery. Following that I then connected one end of the wire from the battery and wrapped it around the small metal piece coming from the LED light. With the last copper wire I attached the last remaining side connecting to the LED to the one side of the last copper wire which will connect to the outside of the box. The last available 2 remaining ends of the wire will connect to a paper clip on the outside of the box. one side of the wire is connected to the larger loop of the paper clip and the last remaining side of the wire was connected to the smaller loop of the paper clip. We bent the small loop of the paper clip upwards so that when we pushed it down the circuit was completed and the light would turn on. I am very excited for future events and projects throughout this club. After joining it has influenced me to try and join other various clubs throughout the university. I am very excited to work with the younger children and ultimately help and support with the club as hopefully the children will gain an entertaining and educational experience. My next meeting happens to be Wednesday September 25th at seven o’clock in Enarson and I cant wait to see what they have in store for us.
Throughout my four weeks of living and studying at the Ohio state University I have utilized the many various resources the school has to offer to its students. At first, when I came upon a problem and question I didn’t know or understand I would try and ask a friend, but if they were no help I would be perplexed as to where I could find help. Fortunately, someone directed me to the MLC also known as the Mathematics and Statics Learning Center, located in the basement of Cockins Hall. This is a free resource center upon which I could receive the much needed help I have been looking for. When I arrived we were required to sign in then take a seat at the various desks and chairs they had available. At this point I began my math work, however, when I reached a question I was unsure about or completely misunderstood, I would place a pink card in a little silver holder mounted on the table. Once this was done, a tutor/ undergraduate Teachers Assistant would come over and help me with my problem answering any questions I had, in depth. I would repeat this process over and over whenever I was stumped or couldn’t arrive at the necessary conclusion needed to complete the problem. Furthermore, other than the Mathematics and Statistics Learning Center, there were other problems I would come across from my chemistry 1210 class that at first I was unsure how to find the necessary help I needed. That being said, I was directed to the LRC also known as the Learning Resource Center located in room 170 on the first floor of the Celeste Laboratory. It was completely free and no appointment was required, therefore when I had my questions and problems, I had just stopped in. Like the MLC the LRC was similar in that I would just show up at my own convenience sit at the various desks and chairs labeled “chemistry 1210” and whenever I was stumped with a problem or had a question, I would simply call one of the teacher assistants over upon which they would answer my question, explain a problem to me and help me work through it. Going to these resource centers have opened my eyes in regards to the various resources and much needed help offered by the university to help me along my college journey. Not to mention, knowing that I have various resources with easy access significantly reduces my stress and anxiety because I am confident I can always find the help I need. In addition, another significant resource center I recently became aware about but unfortunately have yet to use is the ELC also known as the Economics Learning Center located in room 385 in Arps Hall. Similar to the MLC and LRC this resource center is completely free and an appointment isn’t required. I plan to utilize this resource prior to my Economics midterm so I can assure I am well prepared and ready to take this exam. I plan to rotate using these resource centers to the fullest extent in order to help maximize my learning and success here at The Ohio State University.
