Sénégal Study Abroad: Maymester 2014

What? – From 05 May to 30 May, I participated in a study abroad opportunity in Sénégal. I was there to study French. In addition to studying French, I learned a bit of Wolof, studied the effects of colonialism and slavery in this country, and learned of its fight for independence from French rule. Many of my lectures were held at the West African Research Center. My study abroad group and I also visited Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and Gaston Berger University in St. Louis; we toured St. Louis, Touba, Toubab Dialao, Popenguine, and many other places. I was partnered with students from Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar and immersed myself in the culture. I also lived with a host family in the Mermoz neighborhood of Dakar.

So What? – I honestly fell in love with Sénégal and its culture. I can now say that I have Sénégalese friends with whom I try to keep in touch. I spent practically every day of the trip with them, since I pretty much ditched the American students when I met the UCAD students. I loved the food, and the general atmosphere. There is a reason why Sénégal is called the “Country of Téranga,” or the country of hospitality. The moment I met my friends and host family, all they had was open to me. What was theirs was mine, and I learned to return the favor. The culture is sincere and the sense of community is strong. I love Sénégal. I will return, when I have the time and the means.

Now What? – I am interested in African studies and more particularly, opportunities in Sénégal. I am looking into PeaceCorps opportunities and more study abroad programs in Sénégal.
