Columbus To Do List: Part 2
As said in my last post, for the Columbus To Do List my roommate and I decided to explore the local cuisine available in the city of Columbus. We are both foodies, so trying new food is what we live for! Since we already visited two restaurants (refer back to the Part 1 post), we had three more to go in order to finish up the project. Over this weekend, we went to two places that are located in German Village and one place that is located in Clintonville. This time, we had Phil’s parents tag along as well! We started off our “tour de food” at Katzinger’s Delicatessen, which is famous for its large sandwiches. Since we wanted to hit two restaurants in one night (and wanted to eat our “main” dinner at the other place to be mentioned later), we decided to indulge in only dessert at Katzinger’s. Both Phil and I ordered one brownie each, with him ordering a Turtle Brownie and me ordering a Stealer Brownie. We both thought our brownies were pretty good, as they were perfectly soft but also had a little hardness to them. I also ate a garlic pickle, as they offer them for free to customers in their shop, and it was also delicious! I would rate this experience a 10/10, and would recommend Katzinger’s to anyone who wants good brownies and/or pickles!
After we finished eating our dessert at Katzinger’s, we headed out to get some burgers at The Thurman Cafe. Thurman is known for its large burgers, especially the infamous Thermanator. Once we entered the cafe though, we realized that it would take quite a while for us to get a table. There were a LOT of people there, as it was the night of the OSU vs. Penn State game. We had to wait an hour and a half for them to finally sit us at a table. While we waited, I decided to kill some time by playing Galaga on an old arcade machine. That was a very fun retro experience! Getting back to the food part, we were all starving when we finally got a table and the menu. All of us ordered some kind of burger, with Phil ordering the Hawaiian Burger and me getting their famous The Thurman Burger. All was fun and well until they brought out the burgers, which surprised us all and left us speechless. The burgers were around 6 inches tall, with 3/4 pound patties! After the initial shock, we all started to indulge in our food. Neither Phil nor his dad could finish their 3/4 pound patty burgers, but I (the hero) finished everything on the plate and more (the plates included kettle chips and a pickle per plate)! The Thurman Burger was one of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten, and the long wait was definitely worth it! I would give The Thurman Cafe an 11/10, maybe minus 1 point because of the long wait, and would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good burger.
Since we had such a big meal, we decided save our third location for the next day. The next night we decided that we wanted to eat pizza, so we went to Harvest Bar + Kitchen. The restaurant was not crowded at all (like Thurman was), and we only had to wait about 5 minutes before they got us a table. The menus, however, surprised us because they only included pizzas that were in one size (12 inches to be exact). Nevertheless, each of us ordered a separate 12 inch pizza with different topics, with Phil ordering a Monaco pizza and me ordering a Spicy Yuma. I was very disappointed with my pizza, because it wasn’t spicy at all! Don’t get me wrong, the pizza was very delicious. It has amazing crust, which was perfectly soft! But it wasn’t spicy as promised, although I’ll let that slide this time. I tried some of the other pizzas (specifically Phil’s and his dad’s), but they were not as good as mine! Overall, we were all very satisfied with the restaurant. I would rate them 11/10, with no minus points, and would recommend it to any pizza connoisseur.
Overall, this project was great! I loved experiencing the local foods Columbus has to offer, and every place I went to during this project had something to surprise me. I loved trying new foods and new versions of foods I already know, and I am glad I got to experience it with my roommate! This experience has taught me that Columbus has very good food to offer to those who “love” to eat, and that if I want acquire that good food I should go off campus. This project has inspired me to go to even more food places around Columbus, which I will definitely be doing in the near future. To those looking to complete this project, I would definitely recommend doing it on food. It is a very good (and sometimes expensive) experience that any true foodie should do!
