Research
My most recent project was to create reconstructed drawings in a 16×9 digital format. This means I will be analyzing the compositional structure of images and apply the composition to support the digital renditions I end up designing. We will also work with the manipulation of these images and structures by applying linear perspective and other tools I have learned in the past couple of weeks. The intention is to manipulate the object or scenery to help support the intended feeling of emotion. I first started by playing with and learning how different viewpoints support different emotions. Next, I began to experiment with new linear perspectives and see how they play a role within different images, objects, and scenery.
After researching and gaining these new tools I decided to look into what I wanted to reconstruct. I decided I would much rather work with a scene than an object. With that being said I explored online for inspiration and eventually began to come across images of scenery that I felt strongly about. I found this inspiration from an image containing a lighthouse on a hill surrounded by water and rocks right in front of a sunset. I decided to start brainstorming, come up with feelings and a string of emotions that this photo was displaying. It initially gave me a feeling of peace, light, and hope.
Iterations
With this in mind, I decided it was time to think about the new skills I learned and how I could use them to accomplish my intended feeling. I took the image I was inspired by and decided to break it down into simple shapes and lines to make it easier to visualize what I can change. I created multiple drawings testing different compositional structures to see what type of energy I got from each of them. The blue one gave me bubbly/softish feelings, while the black one gave off dark, and stormy vibes, while the red one gave off a sense of direction and peace. This helped to point me in what direction I wanted to go with my final deliverable.
Production
I decided that a long shot perspective with a combination of symmetry, leading lines, and triangles/diagonals was the best way to display this feeling of light. I also stretched and deformed the lighthouse to exaggerate it and bring the viewers’ attention to it, as lighthouses are a symbol of light and hope. I also softened the darkness in the background and deformed the sun to again draw more attention to the beacons of light. On the flip side, the whole goal was to reconstruct two drawings with opposite feelings of each other. So, I decided the opposite feeling of the first drawing would be chaos, loneliness, and darkness. With this being said I still felt that a perspective combination of a long shot and a slightly high angle would best achieve this. With the addition of the golden triangle, leading lines, and triangles/diagonals as well. I felt these tools did the best job of showing opposite emotions although they were used in both drawings. So, I deformed the lighthouse and rocks to make the lighthouse feel inferior to its surroundings and create a lack of light. This is why I also increased the strength of the darkness of the sky and barely let any light through to get rid of any distractions that would take away from the towering rocks and the increased emphasis of the waves.
