Research
In this assignment, I was challenged to actively observe and record 2 locations or objects on-campus that inspire different feelings; one subject matter should inspire motivation and activity while the other should inspire comfort and safety. I had to photograph each location first, and then apply observational drawing and record this subject matter. Then make decisions about what details mattered most in these observations. Luckily this is the start of my second year in Columbus, so I already had a decent idea of what certain places made me feel. Some places that inspired motivation and activeness are Houston House, The Shoe, and The Oval. On the flip side, some places that made me feel comfortable and safe are the 18th Ave Library, CBEC Building, and Scott Traditions. After visiting these places, a couple of times since I was last on campus I settled on The Shoe, and the CBEC Building. For Ohio Stadium, it was extremely hard to get a bunch of different angles due to its large size and symmetry. So, I took one or two pictures I enjoyed in person and then some online. For the CBEC it was much easier to get pictures inside and outside and it made it a lot easier to experiment with different angles and perspectives. Below are photos that were taken in person and gathered from the internet to help gather ideas for the iteration process.
Iterations
It was now time to create iterations for each image found. So, below labeled, are multiple sketches of Ohio Stadium and the CBEC Building based on the multiple pictures used throughout the research process.

Production
I felt motivated and inspired when I’m around Ohio Stadium. The surreal feeling, I had every time I was inside it last year makes me feel excited every time I’m nearby. So, I had found a spot outside the shoe that I felt captured the feeling I had for it without being able to go inside it. So, similarities between my drawing and the photo taken were the attention to detail within the Stadium and the architecture of The Shoe. Some differences would be the removal of things like cars and signs and lampposts so that your attention is focused on the stadium and all the energy you feel is coming from that. I believe that despite the similarities and differences that these both give off the same energy, but the drawing offers a more direct path and vision of The Shoe and what it radiates.
I had felt comfort and safety outside, inside, and all around the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Building. Last year I lived in Houston House and every day on my way to class I had passed that building, and I even studied there multiple times. The site of it especially the radiating glow from the hexagonal wall design is what gives me such feelings of comfort, relaxation, and safety. Some differences would be the removal of the chairs and trash bins. The feeling I got from the building isn’t from the chairs and such so I didn’t want them to distract from what was making me feel comfortable and safe. Some similarities would be the design of the hexagonal design on the wall, as that is the main inspiration from the photograph, and the attention to depth and angle I think also supports the feelings coming from the photograph and drawing. Taking into account all the similarities and differences I feel that both the photograph and drawing give off the same energy. However, I feel that the drawing takes away all the distractions that really don’t play a role in adding to the feeling of comfort and safety within the photograph.
