Water Sampling and Testing

Why do we want to perform water testing?

Our aim is to obtain an understanding of the water quality in your water system (i.e. your municipal/city water) and to associate the measured water quality with various factors in your water system, such as environmental, social, political, and infrastructure related factors.

How will we conduct water testing?

We will accomplish water testing in two ways: Citizen/Community Science and Laboratory Analysis. We will also attempt to compare the water quality results between the two methods. For a list of some contaminants we will be looking for, click here.

Community Science: We will recruit you as the study participant to perform water testing in your home with an affordable and simple water testing kit. Why community science? Community science involves local knowledge, can improve outcomes for governance and livelihoods, creates learning opportunities, and helps with environmental sustainability.

Laboratory Analysis: We will ask you to provide multiple water samples from your house using equipment provided in the water sampling kit that we will send to you. The samples will be delivered back to our lab in a foam cooler with ice and will be processed with different analytical techniques to learn more about the microbial, chemical, and physical composition of the water at your house.

Information on the water sampling procedure can be found in the Participant Instruction document provided on the Participant Instruction page.
