Blog 5- Willa Beatrice Brown

Willa Brown was born in Glasgow, Kentucky in 1906, only three years after the Wright Brothers took to the air for the first time. She would graduate from high school in 1923 and go on to get her teaching degree at Indiana State Teachers College. After graduating she became the youngest high school teacher in the Gary, Indiana school system.

Drawing inspiration from Bessie Coleman, Brown would go on to start her flight lessons in 1934 at the Chicago Aeronautical University. She also did studies at Harlem Field in Chicago which was racially segregated with Cornelius R. Coffey, who was the first African American to establish an aeronautical school in the United States and future husband.

In 1935 Brown received her master mechanics certificate and joined two separate organizations, the Challenger Air Pilot’s Association and the Chicago Girl’s Flight Club. IN 1937 she would become the first African American woman to be licensed as a private pilot in the United States.

The Coffey School which she created along with her husband was the school the provided the aviators for the Tuskegee Airmen, training over 200 of them. She would go on to be a board member of the FAA’s Women’s Advisory Board and after her death would be inducted into the Aviation Musem of Kentucky’s Hall of Fame.

Subjects: The subjects in this situation would be the passengers on the flight and flight crew. Also, the people that fly frequently with American Airlines could be subjects as well, meaning that this news could impact who they decide to fly with next time. In addition, the general public could also fit in this category because if the pilot actually ended up taking off he could have crashed the plane which would directly affect the public in damages or loss of life.

Crowd: The crowd for this situation would be the general public. The reason being they don’t have much power over the situation and when it comes to interest only those around the flight path would have high interest.

Players: The main player in this is the pilot. He had the most power over the situation and events leading up to it and he would also have high interest because his job is now on the line. The airline would also be in this category because the pilot represents them.

Context Setters: The airport would be the context setters because they have a lot of interest in the situation but don’t have the ability to “punish” the pilot for his actions.

My most memorable vacation was when my family went back to Ethiopia after 13 years. First some background information, I was born in Alexandria, Virginia where I lived for the first four months of my life before hopping on a plane to go live in Ethiopia with my grandmother. In Ethiopia, things are very different from how they are in America. As a kid, I was pretty much allowed to do whatever I wanted. So when I eventually came to live in America after six years I was very hurt that I was not allowed the same freedom that I had when I was in Ethiopia, and by “freedom” I mean the freedom to go out and play all over town, I was only allowed to go down the block when I cam here. The memory of doing whatever I wanted created an image of Ethiopia in my mind as some magical wonderland. And as the years went on and family that lived there would send us pictures of how things were changing that image became more and more real for me.

So needless to say when we finally went back I was going back with all this built up excitement. I had so many things that I wanted to explore and do. When we first landed in Ethiopia we were met by all our family at the airport. So my trip had started on a really good note. The next day we went around Addis Ababa exploring all the markets and historical sights. After about a week there we flew to Gondar which is where my family is from.

In Gondar, we were again met at the airport by all of our family that lived there. Gondar was where I had the most fun. I was able to see and hang out with friends that I had not seen in over a decade. It was also where I learned to drive a manual transmission and ride a motorcycle. All in all it was the best trip I ever had becasue I was with almost every single memeber of my family at the same time.

Aurora Flight Sciences is a subsidiary company of Boeing that is doing research on an all-electric autonomous aircraft that would be used to transfer people around a city, much like the system that Uber uses. It would be charged in docking stations that would be erected around the city in which it will operate. This aircraft was recently tested by vertical takeoff and hovering with the company looking to test the other directions of flight. In addition to the transport of people, this service will be used for the transportation of cargo.
Although Boeing is the biggest company that is working on this issue, there are other companies that have tested their own versions of this type of aircraft. The Alpha One prototype that was built by Airbus also accomplished a similar feat of vertical flight and hovering. However, unlike Boeing that has a partnership with Uber to implement their new aircraft into the already existing network that Uber has developed Airbus is looking to create its own network.
Although this is a great idea that has many benefits that it could provide for the public in terms of transportation there are also a lot of drawbacks that it will bring. Security being one of the main concerns as there is the threat of the aircraft being hacked or midair collisions.
The importance of good communication will be important mainly in the digital side of things. There needs to be efficient and secure communication between whatever server is being used as a control station and the individual aircraft. Also, clear communication of the dangers that can be associated with using this mode of transportation will need to be adequately explained to the customers of this mode of transportation failure to explain the risks that can come with this could result in lawsuits that could severely affect the company in question or the concept as a whole.

Ever since I could remember I was always fascinated with flying. I remember when I used to live in Ethiopia when I was about six years old my friends and I  would hold contests to see who could make the best paper airplane in the neighborhood. You would think that because we were so young the paper airplanes we used to make were not any good, and you would be right. I remember the older kids would always win. They had some secret eight-year-old techniques that they would use that always gave them an edge (which I would later find out was folding in the tip of the paper airplane so that it would stay intact for the entire contest). However that did not discourage me, it planted a thought that I would pursue all the way into college, a thought that would grow every time I flew in an airplane. Initially, I wanted to be an aerospace engineer and improve on the current aircraft of the world or perhaps build the future aircraft of tomorrow but I realized that my heart was not really into the idea of sitting in front of a blueprint of an airplane all day long. So with that in mind, I decided to go into Air Transporation with the goal of working on the business side of the Aviation Industry. This would allow me to stay close to my childhood passion but also give me a route into the business world in which I can apply my interpersonal skills to grow in the industry.

Upon graduating with my degree I plan on going into graduate school and getting my Master of Business Administration. After completion of my MBA, I want to go work for a big corporate aviation company so that I can get a first-hand look at the inner workings of the industry at a high level. With the experience that I would gain from this, I would branch out on my own and try to establish a business that would work closely with other aviation companies and the military in building the aircraft of tomorrow.
