“The last stage (end of life) includes the procedures for treatment of the bottles and waste of packaging (cardboard boxes, corks etc.). This phase can also have great impacts on the environment depending on the chosen method of waste management (for example, reuse, recycling, landfilling, etc).” (Wine Supply Chain) While the study does not delve into end of life phase, we understand that from when it leaves the shelf it is the responsibility of the consumer follow certain waste management procedures.
In regards to wine producers as a whole in Southern Australia, SAWIA (South Australian Wine Industry Association) has a good history of environmental sustainability. Members are consistently engaged with the Environment Protection Authority and always asking for feedback and advice how on to make the environment a better place.
SAWIA was able to establish the first industry sector agreement with the State under the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act 2007.
