Education-What is Ecological Engineering?

Ecological Engineering, or termed by others as an Ecosystem Engineer, use ecology combined with engineering skills to design, restore, and manage ecosystems that integrate human society with its natural environment for the benefit of both. The goals of an Ecological Engineer include restoration of ecosystems that have been disturbed by human interactions. They also strive to develop new sustainable ecosystems that can benefit the natural environment around it with little to no human interactions necessary.

I have learned so many great things in the program here at Ohio State University. I have learned how to cooperate with fellow engineers to solve crucial everyday problems that will help ensure public health, safety and welfare. From learning how to use AutoCAD to develop stream topographic information to understanding how to properly map out areas of land using surveying tools, my program has taught me so much information that can lead me to success in my career. I have learned how to properly use MATLAB and code things such as vehicles to travel around tracks using the least amount of energy possible. These skills, with many more, will help me achieve my career goal of becoming an Ecological Engineer working under the EPA. One day I hope to become a successful engineer who can use the knowledge I gained from my colleagues to further help and improve native wetlands that are slowly fading away from this planet.
