2nd Round Prototypes

After getting feedback on the sketch prototypes and discussing each concepts viability further, the group chose to continue solely with the issue of improving wheelchair footrests. Three ideas were explored further and are depicted below.

Concept 1:

This concept is a variation of the team’s original fold-out calf/footrest concept. This does not completely collapse under the seat. It also raises the knees in order to more effectively life the feet off the ground and provide better support.

Further questions to explore:
  • The mechanism/actuator – what can effectively raise the knees and extend the calf support simultaneously?
  • Will raising the knees be considered restricting? What regulations or rules are there regarding calf and foot support in wheelchairs?

Concept 2:

This concept follows the theme of raising the user’s feet without using a traditional footrest. Here a lever actuates a roller to move along the leg and down in order to naturally raise the leg off the ground. This adaptation allows for a users who have a wide range of heights.

Extended position:
Further questions to explore:
  • Consider the placement of the linkage. Outside attached to armrest? Below wheelchair?

Concept 3:

This concept utilizes pulleys to raise and lower the feet. This could ideally be actuated by either the patient or the caretaker. When lowered, the footrests would be flat on the ground, allowing the patient to get out of the chair with more ease.

Further questions to explore:
  • What pulley configuration will effectively raise the feet a few inches of the ground?
  • Could this be a modular product one could easily attach to existing wheelchairs?
