Our Approach

In all of our events, activities, and projects, we seek to engage collaboratively with individuals, scholarship, and organizations in ways that prioritize local knowledge, acknowledge and seek out diverse experiences and perspectives, and connect Appalachian Studies to broader social movements, focusing especially on intersectionality. In order to support the creativity of our members, other individuals, and groups, we aim to provide the resources and networks necessary for their creativity to succeed.

We prioritize the voices, reflections, and experiences of individuals from or connected to the region.

Events & Activities of the ASN@OSU

Scholars, writers and critics of literature, and journalists have long found the greater Appalachian region one of rich cultural, political and economic significance which at the same time presents unique challenges and struggles. Roughly one third of Ohio’s counties are Appalachian, yet only seven percent of Ohio State’s undergraduate students currently enrolled call the region home. While Ohio State does not currently have an Appalachian Studies program, there is no shortage of scholars and students passionate about the region.

The Appalachian Studies Network@OSU creates and supports opportunities for complex dialogues about Appalachians and the Appalachian region by:

  • Collaborating with individuals and groups across campus who are engaging the region, identifying ways in which we can share with and support one another
  • Coordinating opportunities to share personal experiences, research, and artistic works both at OSU campus and by connecting students, faculty, and staff to individuals and organizations off campus
  • Hosting discussion forums, social gatherings, and book clubs that bring collaborators together
  • Applying for grants to support OSU students, staff, and faculty with their Appalachian-focused projects and especially to partner with Appalachian organizations and communities
  • Providing a web presence and staffing to support and promote the activities of ASN@OSU members and collaborators

Ways that we support students, faculty, staff, and community/organizational partners

  • Seeking funding to attend and present at the annual meeting of the Appalachian Studies Association
  • Connecting members to individuals and organizations in the field and beyond
  • Connecting members to internship opportunities
  • Hosting and collaborate to put on community-building events across campus, Ohio, and the region
  • Providing unique learning and discussion opportunities
  • Circulating news, events, and announcements of interest to the group

Individual students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to contact ASN@OSU coordinators to propose ideas for events and activities!
