Stop Motion Moving Picture Post

A Day In Ohio

For this week’s assignment of creating a stop motion moving picture film, I originally had planned on creating a short film showing the four seasons. But living in Ohio, I decided to title it A ‘Day’ in Ohio, because it is normal to see almost every season all in one day in Ohio. And I also chose to make a cute, video for the recent holiday. My video first starts off with it snowing outside, and the resident’s tiny head poking out of the front door. It then continues onto spring, and summer, all while the tiny character debates on whether he’d like to leave his home just yet. Autumn comes around and so does a friend, and the homebodied resident is finally seen to be leaving the house, to go trick-or-treating (with his superhero costume accompanied by a cape). The movie then ends, wishing the audience a Happy Halloween.

Instead of creating a stop-motion by cutting hundreds of pieces of paper to form tiny little bodies, or creating something using photoshop, I decided to draw the scenes on a chalkboard, using a white chalk marker, and erasing and redrawing after each picture. And then taking the pictures using PhotoBooth on my computer to stabilize the camera, since I did not have a tripod handy. The song choice, titled For Mimi, comes from the YouTube Audio Library (For Mimi by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://www.twinmusicom.org/).

Creating a stop-motion picture, instead of taking a traditional photograph gives the opportunity to the viewer to see and watch how the character(s) develop throughout s story. It is still considered photography but looking at the series of photographs with minor changes to suggest movement.

Graphic Design Blog Post

For the Graphic Design post, I decided to create a magazine cover with one of the photos I had used for my portrait post. I chose to turn the portrait of Kane into a magazine cover for Hurley magazine. I started off with just adding a simple Hurley label and erasing the space that overlapped his head to set the title behind him. I, then, added a couple of subtitles to the left and right sides of the photo, adding to the typical magazine style. And finally, finished the piece off with a fake barcode in the bottom righthand corner. I chose to use this portrait for a magazine cover because I felt that it portrayed the perfect subject matter and composition to do so. Adding the text into the photograph make it more interesting by making the viewer want to continue looking through the magazine.

Portraits Blog Post

For this week’s assignment, I decided to take portraits of my friend’s son, Kane – which was entertaining yet difficult at the same time…

For my first photo, I chose to take a picture of Kane and attempted to capture an example of hard light. There is an obvious source of light being cast on the left side of his face. There is lighting coming from an above ceiling fan, but the more dramatic lighting, is hitting his face on the left from a window across the room. The white wall and black couch in the background also helps to make his figure stand out, especially his blondish-red hair. I also tried out some editing techniques by removing some of the blemishes from his face.

For my example of Soft Light, I used a picture of Kane that I had taken outside, underneath the playground. There is an obvious shadow casted across his face and also his body caused by the playground equipment. It was a sunny and hot outside, causing the picture to have dark shadows in the foreground and bright, sunny spots in the background. The sun does actually make a brief appearance on the left side of his face, as it peeps through the fixture.

Attempting to take pictures showing lighting of the golden hour was one of my favorites of the different lightings. It created the most dramatic and beautiful pictures caused by the clouds and the amount of sunlight, blocked with the subject in the foreground. For this representation, I took a photo of my boyfriend at Lennox, with the sunlight peeking out around his head, even through the thinner parts of his hair. The photo was taken a few minutes before the sun finished setting. To exaggerate some of the effects on this photo, I cranked up the saturation to +40 and turned the hue down to -36, which created a neat look to the photo.

For my free edit, I chose to do another example of hard lighting. This photo shows bright, sunlight coming from behind Kane and hitting the top of his head. Also, you can see how the light sort of wraps around his arms, beginning at the top. Along with the light shown on Kane’s body, there are strong shadows around the picture caused by Kane and the playground equipment proving that there is a heavy amount of light coming from above.

In these photos, you can get a sense of a personality or an identity from Kane. In two of the photos, he has an enormous smile – as most children this age usually do – accompanied by his favorite toys. In my first example of hard lighting, he shows somewhat of a smile, but a little bit of his attitude too.

Composition Blog Post

For this blog post, I chose to show a part of my identity by taking pictures around my town, Dublin. All of the photos I took, are some part of my life – either today or of my past.

For my first picture, I tried to create an open composition style. The photo was taken from lower than eye level and shows one of the popular areas of the historic part of Dublin. The lines from the brick pathway are leading off of the page, as well as the rest of the buildings in the top half of the photo.

For my representation of thirds, I used a picture I took in Colorado of the Royal Gorge Bridge. The Ohio state flag lies right on the one of the intersections of the thirds lines and leaves the rest of the photo open, bringing more emphasis to the flag.

For one of my three photos of a closed composition, I took a photo of a tombstone at a small cemetery behind my elementary school. The subject of this photo is clearly the stone, with the grassy background making it stand out. This picture could also be seen as a symmetrical photo too. Although, the writing on the stone isn’t symmetrical, everything else is.

As a symmetrical composition, I chose to use a set of doors that are located near my house at a place called the Dancing Bunnies. This picture is perfectly symmetrical, and everything is balanced evenly in the picture.

And for my final picture, I decided to throw in another example of a closed composition. This photo depicts my new identity as an OSU student. The sign stands out and it closes off the image.

During this assignment, it was interesting to see what different angles and editing techniques do to a picture. With closed compositions, the subject is made to stand out – or pop – more than it would if the picture was taken using a closed composition. Also, with a symmetrical composition, it provides a calm balance with all of the other matter of the photograph.

Photo Basics Blog Post

For my first series of photos, I chose to use the main entrance to the OSU football stadium to show over and under exposure examples. Football is one thing that Ohio State is known for so i thought it represented the school very well. This is also one of the very first things I see when I drive into campus each day. The underexposed version of the photo contains too many shadows and takes away from seeing what the picture really is. The overexposed photo brings lots of light to the arch of the entrance and causes the shadows to stand out more in the top of the arch and the three smaller archways in the center. Although the original has a perfect balance of lights and darks, I feel the overexposed looks better in my opinion.

For my second series of photos, I chose to use a photo of the union to show the difference between warm and cool temperatures in photos. I chose to photograph one of the very first buildings I walked into as a freshman at Ohio State. I feel as though the union captures the collective identity of OSU. The cool image shows more of a mysterious and spookier tone; almost as if it were an old, abandoned building. The warm photo makes it seem as if it is a sunny day outside and the sun is shining through the windows, into the hall of the union. I would prefer to be in either the original photo environment or the cooler toned environment.

Assignment 1: Mini Critique

For my first blog post, I decided to choose the site Care.com for my mini critique. This site is something that I have had to use frequently recently. It is set up in the way that it is easy for someone to navigate through and find exactly what they are looking for. There aren’t too many distracting features on the home page until you reach the bottom of the page. Each ‘button’ you press, easily guides you to the next page that you’ll need, whether you are searching for a care job, or looking for a caregiver.
