Portraits

For this weeks assignment, I chose to photograph my roommate, Angelina. In the first photo I enhanced the image to make her look like she has more makeup on, whiter teeth, and clearer eyes. I repeatedly used a paint brush tool that looked like grass along her eyelids to give her fake eyelashes. I used black paint, but lowered the opacity to make it look more realistic. To whiten her teeth and eyes I used the dodge tool. To make her eye color clearer, I used the sharpen tool. Last I added low opacity lipstick on her lips with a paint brush and then brightened the whole picture. For the second picture I warped the image to make her face look plumper and gave it a fish eye view look.

Edited Campus Photos

For the first image, I took an aerial picture from the 11th floor of Thompson Library. In photoshop, I cropped the picture to get rid of the excess building and then selected the sky to make it look like a sunset by changing the color balance. In the next image, I took a standard picture in front of Thompson. I changed the exposure and brightness of everything below the sky to make it brighter and slightly changed the color balance in the sky. Then to add a little flare, I made the brick pathway yellow because I live in Kansas and everyone always makes “follow the yellow brick road” and other Wizard of Oz jokes to me. In the last image, I took a ground up picture of University Hall and manipulated the sky to make it more blue by changing the color balance. I distorted the entire image to make the building look taller and less crooked, and I also changed the brightness and contrast of the building to make it pop.

Experimenting with Photoshop

For these images of Brutus, I have the original on display to show the difference cool and warm tones make. For the cool toned picture of Brutus, I changed the hue and color balance to blueish tones and then added a “cool filter” on top. For the warm picture I did the same but with reddish tones and a “warm filter” instead. Then, I decided to make Brutus pink for fun because it is my favorite color. For that one, I simply changed the hue/saturation to a magenta/pink color.

For this image of my friend Ally, I chose to start with overexposure, but rather than only changing the exposure, I also changed the curves to give it more style. Next, I decided to make one of these images black and white, playing with the settings until I found a balance I liked. Last, I created an underexposed image, where I changed not only the exposure, but also the brightness and levels as well.

Morning Walk With Ally

Waking up after an exhausting game day, Ally and I went on a walk to get fresh air. We decided to walk around north campus, where we live, and then explore some interesting places near the dorms. After leaving Bowen and taking a rule of thirds picture in front, we made our way to some other dorms and came across a bike rack and stairs. I thought the bike rack would be a great angle for open composition because the bars lead right to the subject, Ally. The stairs were perfect for symmetrical composition and happen to also lead to the subject. On our way back to Bowen, we sat down and took a break to chat on the red chairs between Raney and Bowen where I took a closed composition picture of her face, framed by the red chair.
