African American and African Studies Community Extension Center

African American and African Studies (AAAS) arose from the demands of students, faculty, and community advocates in the aftermath of the waning Civil Rights Movement to have the experiences and far-reaching contributions of Black people recognized, explored, and included in academia. As an inherently applied discipline with social responsibility at its core, the OSU AAAS Department created the Community Extension Center (CEC) in 1972 to deliver public-facing scholarship, community-engaged programming, and to foster political action for social change.

Art Possible Ohio

Art Possible Ohio is a statewide nonprofit service organization that focuses on making arts experiences more accessible to Ohioans with disabilities. We work with community partners to present accessible public programs designed to dispel myths about disability and celebrate artists with disabilities. Our programs include Accessible Expressions Ohio, a statewide art exhibition, ReelAbilities Film Festival Columbus, a film festival dedicated to normalizing disability in the film industry, and Adaptation, Integration, and the Arts, a statewide arts integration program in Ohio’s public and charter schools.

The Community Music School (CMS) in the School of Music at The Ohio State University offers music education in-person and online to children and adults with diverse backgrounds, skill levels and differing educational goals through private instruction, classes and ensembles at the brand new Timashev Family Music Building on the campus of The Ohio State University (1900 College Rd.) and at the African American and African Studies (AAAS) Community Extension Center (905 Mt Vernon Ave.). Highland Youth Garden

At Highland Youth Garden, our mission is to grow food, grow minds and grow community in partnership with the Hilltop community of West Columbus. Highland Youth Garden is considered by the City of Columbus to be a local model for community engagement, food justice and beautification. We were established in 2009, grew thanks to the hard work of committed volunteers, and achieved federal nonprofit status in 2019. We grow and distribute fresh produce to our neighbors, build and support backyard Family Gardens, provide nature- and nutrition-based education to over 350 Hilltop students in grades preschool through grade 8, offer after school gardening clubs for neighborhood children, employ and mentor Westside teenagers and provide a peaceful and welcoming community gathering space in a challenged neighborhood. Maroon Arts Group

Maroon Arts Group (MAG) is a non-profit grassroots organization galvanized to build and provide a platform for community, art, and learning, centered in the cultivation, celebration, and promotion of Black Cultural production and art. In 2016, MAG officially became a 501-C3 Non-Profit organization. Since our inception, MAG has developed scores of programming including but not limited to history learning communities, poetry events, artist and writer’s residencies, gallery shows, original plays, and more.

In 2017, the opportunity to expand our vision and impact of being a platform for Black ingenious centered in community with the MPACC (Movement Pursuing Arts, Commerce & Community) BoxPark. The MPACC Box Park is an outdoor event venue built with repurposed shipping containers in the Historic Bronzeville District of Columbus, Ohio. The BoxPark holds green space for performance, community gardening and an art gallery for emerging local artists. Through community gatherings and public events, Maroon Arts Group’s MPACC BoxPark has become a space the encourages daily encounters with art, performance, and community design events that are created by a range of local and cultural organizers.

MAG has become a vital force in Columbus’s cultural landscape by providing platforms for Black cultural production while preserving community heritage. The organization’s grown is demonstrated by the 2024 acquisition of the historic York-Masons Building (now the Maroon Culture Lab), a 95-year-old cultural landmark originally constructed by Black architects.

The Neighborhood Design Center is seeking a summer associate to assist with the implementation of our Youth CoLab program. Youth CoLab is a summer youth employment program that blends workforce readiness, design education, and community investment to provide an introduction to design careers. Targeting recruitment in Columbus’ ‘opportunity neighborhoods,’ Youth CoLab also seeks to increase diversity and equity in design professions by providing paid opportunities for youth to learn, engage with, and implement design solutions to assist a local business.

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday
  • When the CoLab program is in session:
    • The program will run from Monday, June 9 – Friday, August 1st.
    • Our sessions run from 10am – 4pm and our staff will need to be present from 9:30am – 4:30pm.
    • NDC observes Juneteenth and the Fourth of July and no program will occur on those days.

Location

  • The Neighborhood Design Center is located at 1445 Summit Street, Suite 300, Columbus, Ohio 43201 in Weinland Park and is walkable from campus.
  • Programming will take place at Directions for Youth and Families (for the first four weeks of learning) located at 657 S Ohio Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43205.
  • Implementation will take place at Community Development For All People (DC4AP) (for the second four weeks), located at 946 Parsons Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43205.
  • Site visits will occur throughout Greater Columbus.
  • Transportation will be provided for all site visits and transportation can be provided by NDC staff from NDC to Directions for Youth and Families and to CD4AP.

Duties

  • Assist in the planning, organization, and execution of the Youth CoLab program, ensuring alignment with the NDC’s mission.

The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio’s stories. ROY G BIV Gallery champions emerging artists by presenting thought-provoking exhibitions that increase the public’s awareness of the artists’ work and enhance the cultural diversity of Central Ohio by focusing on artistic merit alone. The summer associate at ROY G BIV Gallery will play an essential role in supporting the gallery’s exhibitions, programming, and community outreach. The associate will assist with the residency program by conducting research on potential artists and helping develop content and logistics for residency activities. They will also contribute to the gallery’s social media presence, creating engaging content and assisting with digital campaigns to increase community engagement. Additionally, the Summer Associate will help plan and execute arts programming, including outreach to local artists, event coordination, and managing logistics for workshops and performances. Gallery sitting and visitor engagement are key aspects of the position, as the associate will provide on-site support during gallery hours and events. Duties

Research Assistant (Residency Program):

  • Assist in developing content for the residency program.
  • Conduct research on potential artists, their work, and how it aligns with the goals of the residency. Research best practices for conducting residency programming.
  • Contribute to writing and compiling residency reports and materials for future programming.
  • Support logistics and coordination of artists’ residency activities.

Social Media & Marketing:

  • Develop content for social media platforms to promote events, exhibitions, and organizational initiatives.

Programming Assistant:

We Amplify Voices

Formerly The Dick & Jane Project, WAV’s mission is to amplify to empower underrepresented voices through creativity.  Founded as an after-school songwriting program by Columbus-based charter school administrator Ben Shinabery in 2011, WAV has since provided programming in over 40 Central Ohio schools, and 25 community programs, and currently directly impact 3,800 individuals annually. We lead groups through a healing-centered creative process, that involves different mediums from recording a radio quality song, to painting, writing and performing poetry, learning to sing, and performance. WAV sessions focus on building self-esteem, character, and collaboration skills aligned to Social Emotional Learning strategies. Life Stories Marketing Coordinator

The Life Stories Marketing Coordinator role will collaborate with the Executive Director, Development Director and Director of Storytelling to oversee the marketing and coordination of our Life Stories documentary project. The Life Stories projects feature interviews with women and men serving life or long sentences at two Ohio correctional institutions. Their stories are shared through documentaries that explores themes of trauma, resilience and hope. WAV has provided trauma informed screenings, and interactive workshops to groups ranging from the Ohio Public Defenders Office to the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ). The workshops offer participants an intimate and humanizing look at the complex lives of women and men who have been sentenced to life in prison. They are designed to raise awareness around the circumstances that can lead an individual down the path of a life sentence, and to build empathy among groups that can drive changes in public policy, promote civic engagement, and bring about positive changes in the day-to-day treatment of incarcerated individuals.

  • Shape, manage and drive the implementation of WAV’s existing Communications Plan to support the Life Stories project development.

Sound.WAV Social Enterprise: Marking & Operations Associate

This position will play a vital role in launching the program — from setting up operational systems and marketing strategies to coordinating logistics and community outreach.

    • WOSU is interested in finding off-campus locations, doing site visits, and making logistical plans for taking IMMERSE “on the road” to local schools or churches.
  • Assist with production of audio content for radio, including production of promotions, audio editing of local concerts, and production of music beds for daily radio broadcasts.
  • Assist with development of social media content, blog posts and other related media to aid in promoting Classical 101’s on-air programming and community outreach.
  • Assist with the management of a database for broadcast, including coding music by demographics, editing on-air playlists, assembling playlists for broadcast, entering audio into automation system, and generating reports.

  • Prior classical music knowledge is desired, including musical repertoire by under-represented composers and performers as WOSU seeks to diversify our programming.
