This year I volunteered with the safe-point harm reduction clinic that works to keep individuals that are currently battling drug dependency to stay healthy and safe as they work to get clean. I started my service by building harm reduction kits that are used to lower the risk of disease passage, poisoning, and injury during injection drug use. I decided to become more involved after this initial project because I feel passionate about the reduction of harmful drug use and overdoses in a city where overdose is rampant. I met with a group of undergraduates on campus who represented a new organization called ‘Save a Life’ about becoming a Narcan naloxone carrier. The rate of opioid overdose on and around campus has been exceptionally high recently and I felt it was my duty to do what I can to help the situation. They connected me to a non-profit group based out of New York that trains in the administration of nasal spray naloxone. I completed a training that included information on how to check symptoms of overdose and when to treat with naloxone. I now carry naloxone and am prepared to treat overdoses at any time.
