Postcard

I do the fuji’s postcard since I have the plan to visit japan recently, and the fuji is also the very famous scene in japan. To do this, I should design the front in the Ai. All we need is to type the content we want in the application. Click effect-3D-extrude option and adjust the suitable angel to add the shadow for the fronts. Then choose object-extend appearance to let us be able to operations on the front. Click A, select the surface pattern of each front and create a copy for each of them. Finally, import a picture you want in the application, create a serval copy of them and make sure arrange them under the front copy. Choose the button Object-Clipping mask-make to create the front shape-like background. One picture may be able to process one front only. Adjust the position of front copy to make them fit the 3d front well. Then copy these front into the photoshop and choose the background for them. To import and modify a script, choose the ‘text’ button on the left side of the application and type the words you want in.

Final Project

Survival:

When I first saw this topic, ‘survival’, the thing that entered in my mind first is ‘survive in the work’ since that was a midterm week, and I really had to fight with tons of review work and assignment. I want to use the element ‘sea’ to express that there is a lot of work in my picture. And I also need a people to survive in this sea. I plan to let this person on a paper boat which is very dangerous. ‘Dangerous’ is one of the important element of survival. To avoiding overusing the imagery, I can’t just put a picture of the sea there and let the viewer guess. So that I decided to put some semitransparent layer on the sea like coding or the pressure from boss to clarify the meaning I want to express. I also choose the picture of a man who is working to highlight the idea I want to convey to my reader that: This is a picture about a programmer survive in his endless coding and the pressure from his boss. I want my viewer can feel the pressure and the hardship the programmer in this picture is facing. To make sure the viewer can experience these meaning is very important for me since I hope my artwork can bring people something that they can express on their own words.

When I was working on this work, someone suggests me to use the wooden boat rather than the paper boat to make the whole picture more harmonious. But I don’t think this kind of change is necessary. As I said before, I wish the ‘paper boat’ can give the viewer the more feeling of unsafety to make my work fits the topic ‘survive’ better. There are also some people recommending me to adjust the size and shape of the layers of ‘coding picture’ to makes them fill the whole ocean which is treated as background. I think this is a good idea the whole screen can bring more impression to people than one piece.

The following is about the process I create my work.:

Firstly, I select two pictures about coding to enrich the background, ocean, to represent the meaning that a worker is facing tons of work. Repeat the same process to add a ‘boss’ layer in the work. To do this, decrease the opacity of the layers of these two pictures and put these two layers above all other layers. Then I choose a picture of a people who is struggling with his work. Use the ‘magnetic lasso’ in the tool menu on the right of the windows to choose the counter of that person in the picture, then press ‘crtl+J’ to create a layer that only contains that people. Repeat the same process to cut out a paper boat like what I show in my work. Combine the ‘people layer’ and ‘boat’ layer together.

Contrast:

My second topic is about the contrast:
When I talk about the ‘contrast’, the couple of things that come in my mind are water, fire, and wood. But I need more element to enrich my work. I think of the process of water drops into the water, and I decide to reverse this process in my work to express the idea, ’contrast’. I also use a picture of layer as a background to form the double contrast in my work since the desert represents the monotonous which can have a contrast with the first layer of my work consists with three elements. I think the contrast between these pictures are very superficial, and I don’t have to worry my work overuse the imaginary too much. Through this picture I want my viewer to feel two different kinds of feeling the integrity from the range of the pictures of water drops and the incapability from the contrast of the three elements.

Couple days ago, I talked about my work with my roommate when I was still finishing that. He reminded me to use the double contrast to enrich the content of my work which is about the use the desert as background I mentioned in the previous paragraph. This is a good strategy for me when I was struggling to add the new element in my picture at that time. During the final critique, I heard some suggestions from the classmates that I need to change the order of the two ‘water drops’ pictures and make sure I don’t put them together which they thought these two pictures looked so harmonious to fit my topic. I didn’t accept this idea at that time. As I said in the previous paragraph I want to use the reverse of the process of dropping into the water to create the feeling of contrast for viewer. Separate these two pictures only will make my work be random and meaningless.

The following is about the process I create my work.:

First, I choose the two pictures to represent the two different moments of the process that water drops into the water. Use the option ‘Transform’ in the edit menu and choose ‘Flip Horizontal’ to rotate one of picture 180 degrees, reduce their opacity and adjust them in the right position. then add the ‘layer masks (revel all) ‘in ‘layer’ Menu on them and use the ‘Linear gradient’ in the gradient tool to add the gradient effect for the layers to make a transition part between these two pictures. Do the same thing to process ‘fire’ picture and ‘forest’ picture. Secondly, choose a picture of a desert and to adjust its size to make sure it can cover all other four pictures. Reduce the opacity and put it at the position above other four layers. Choose the option ‘merge the layers’ in ‘layer’ menu and use the ‘lasso tool’ to select the joint part of four pictures. Finally, use the ‘Gaussian blur’ in ‘Filter’ Menu to blur these parts to improve the overall sense of this work.

Portrait Edits

Before:

After:

Before(me):

After(me):

Firstly, I copy the one layer from background named blemish for preparation. Then use the spot healing brush tool to remove obvious blemish on the skin. Secondly, To make the skin more smooth, we also should creat the two copies of the blemish layer and rename it as skin tone and details separately. Use the gauss blur to remove the texture on the skin tone layer and use then use the ‘apply image option’ to subtract the color of skin tone from details layer. Adjust detail layer to linear light to make the image can display normally. Use the lasso tools to select the area you think should be more smooth and use the gauss blur tool to blur them.Thirdly, Create a new copy of skin tone and use the dodge and burn to adjust the portrait as you want. Lastly, To enhance the eyes, create a lightness and contrast layer and improve the brightness of whole portrait. Then use the brush with black but white ground to cover the whole picture  except pupil.

Group Joiner Project

The digital collage we assembled in Photoshop

The digital collage created by Photoshop using the Automate feature

The physical collage we cut and glued in class

Finally, we finished the group joiner work. It’s really a hard work for us. The most frustrating things for us is that sometimes, we found two pictures whose characters’ postures has a good link with each other, but then we realized quickly that when we put these two pictures together, the backgrounds of these pictures didn’t match each other at all.

I feel I am very lucky since I got three pictures which capture three different shots of the movements of character’s head. This is very helpful to improve the continuity of our whole work.

No, the photoshop doesn’t know how to think, and it won’t know what humans want of course. Like the pictures we provided above. What we want is to show a person’s different action at the different moment in one picture. But what the photoshop do is to combine a complete stair for us.

Hockney must be very exciting and surprising about this new technology since it means he can do the more precise modification of this work and creates more complex and beautiful picture.

I think we should treat photoshop as a tool for creation. As I said photoshop can’t think by itself, and they won’t know what you want forever. What they can do is the more precise modification and post-processing of your work like the pen or camera. They will only work under your instruction.

Composite Landscape

Tool:  layer masks, selection tools, and gradients.

I use the selection tool to select the image I want and use the layer mask to cut the erase part of the image from the layer.

Gradient is used to create the sense of distance for the train like the one travel from distant place.

Free transform is also very important to coordinate size of layer to make the sense of dimension.

HW 03

Hi, guys I will show you an interesting picture I made by the Photoshop.

The reason that why I choose this picture to finish my work is that I just think Napoleon is charming since he let the France conquer the large area of the European under his leader.

origin painting name <<Bonaparte franchissant le Grand-Saint-Bernard>>, Jacques-Louis David

To finish this picture there are several step to do.

You need to use tool adjustment-curve, marquee tool. blur-average, layer mask, brush, flatten layers.

Use curve tool, you can tweaked the RGB channels. Firstly you need to use shift-left click to achieve information from the layer you cut from the historical image. Then shift-command to select the layer from your own photo, type the RGB information you achieve before in the sequence Red, Green, Blue.

User layer mask tool to make the counter of the layer from your picture melt more softly in the historical painting.

You may also need cut tomask tool several time to cut the layer from painting, reduce opacity and cover your photo’s layer to mimic the texture of original painting on your photo’s layer.

Element:

Value: specifically means the brightness or darkness. In this picture, the lights near the two side of the door have the different brightness.

Space: including the positive space and negative space. In this picture, the positive space like clock tower much more lighter than the negative space like the building behind.

Shape: The contour of a flat object. The shape of this pattern on this paper box is rectangular.

Form means 3-D object. The metal box with words ‘SONY’ is a form.

Color: chromatic form. The curtain in my room has different color like purple, green and brown

Line: moving point. This is a picture that consists of the curved line and straight line.

Texture: Tactile quality of the surface. The texture of this PCV project is smooth

Principle

Alignment: arrange in a straight line. In this picture, the Led lights range in a straight line.

Proportion: The four color, orange, green, yellow, pink, shares the same proportion in this picture.

Contrast: The red hexagon has a great contrast with surrounding hexagons whose colors are brown and black.

Unity: this picture, the contour of dark part and black part link up perfectly, which make this image looks like a unity.

The image on this slipper looks like a leopard in movement, jumping over the words ‘PUMA’.

Emphasis: highlight the existing of one object by using different color, shape, value etc.

The snake-like shape on my laptop was emphasis since it has a relatively light color in the dark ground.

Pattern: The pattern of the ground is serval squares one by one.

Balance: A distribution of equal visual weight. The book at the top of the plank is in balance. So that it can stand on the plank.
