Art, Technology, Race and Culture faculty position open

The Department of Art within the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks an artist for the position of Assistant Professor. This position is in the Department’s rapidly expanding Art and Technology area, which represents a significant proportion of undergraduate art enrollments. We invite applicants whose work engages with technology and its intersections in class, race, and social justice. We welcome practices across a wide range of technological inquiry, including but not limited to moving image, robotics, animation, immersive environments, extended reality (VR/AR), gaming, artificial intelligence, and interactive media.

We seek a colleague who has the potential to: Develop and contribute to interdisciplinary connections with other departments and centers such as Computer Science, School of Architecture, the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI), the Sustainability Institute, Comparative Studies’ Science and Technology Studies; offer innovative graduate and undergraduate courses; and mentor students interested in art practices. We especially welcome applications from artists from underrepresented groups in the arts.

Qualifications:

This appointment will begin August 15, 2023, and the successful applicant must have MFA or PhD in hand in Art or a related field by appointment date. ABDs welcome to apply. Visiting Artist Talk by Illya Mousavijad

Visiting Assistant Professor in Art & Technology, Illya Mousavijad will speak about his work on Tuesday, April 5th at 2pm in Hopkins Hall, room 262. 

Illya Mousavijad is an emerging, multidisciplinary, conceptual artist born and raised in Isfahan, Iran. He received his BFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and his MFA from Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. His art practice investigates the limits and extents of exile, border and identity politics, Middle Eastern history, exile literature, US and Iran relations. He works across varied media including installation, painting, video, and computer animation. He has collaborated with international artists of various disciplines and exhibited in Iran and the US. He is currently teaching at the Ohio State University as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art.

From Molecules to Ecosystems

Announcing a new special topics course for Fall 2017

This Art/Science studio course will explore connections between micro and macro, plants and humans, local and global, anthropocentric and ecocentric. Co-taught by Molecular Genetics professor Iris Meier and Art professor Amy Youngs, students will learn to apply both scientific and artistic methods to creative projects. Working individually and collaboratively, we will do experiments in the lab and art studios, creating works that explore  • climate stress & adaptation • biotech / bioart • constructed ecosystems • biomimicry • hypernature • symbiosis.

All forms of art making welcome in this class. While we will be discussing, reading, and experimenting with molecules, plants and eco-aesthetics, students can chose to work in media appropriate to their creative skill sets. Ideal for graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in studio-based or lab-based disciplines such as Art, Biology, Science, Design, Music and Architecture.
