Second Week at Arsenal

Another week has passed in the UK and so has another week of interning at Arsenal’s Training Center in London Colney.

After the win of the FA cup this past weekend, only the Arsenal Ladies (the Women’s Team) are practicing right now as the men’s team ended their Premier League season in Second Place. But that does not stop the pace of the Grounds Crew at the facility.

On Monday, I continue to help with Mick, the gardener at Arsenal’s Training Center, with mowing the different areas around the parking lot and doing some upkeep work on the landscape.

Also on Monday, Jeff Leinham from the University of Nebraska started working at the training center along with me until August 2nd. You can read his blog here.

Tuesday through Thursday involved mostly mowing the new areas of the fields that are growing to continuation of mowing the current areas that are used for practice for the Arsenal Ladies. During the three days, I started to use the Honda push mower to help with the mowing of the new grass.

On Wednesday I started to paint the lines for the goalkeeper’s area. It was an okay start for a first timer like me to paint the lines, but not a pro.

Friday was back to helping the gardener with the mowing, except the gear box decided to not work with me on the mower. But I did help the grounds crew mow with the Honda push mowers before lunch. After lunch, I helped with removing weeds and planting new flowers around the entrance area before more of the May rain comes to London Colney during the weekend.

Speaking of the flowers, I am invited to the Chelsea Flower Show on May 27th!

I would like thank the Institute of Groundsmanship for inviting me on this once in a lifetime experience and can not wait to post to you all of what I see at the show.
