My name is Vaishnavi Aradhyula and I am a current Biology Major with plans of minoring in Psychology and pursuing a career in Psychiatry in the future. I come from a small Victorian town located in Northville, Michigan and completed High School at Northville High School. My time in High School was spent more on the attempt to figure out my true passions and interests, rather than to pursue them. This has helped me in more ways than I could ever imagine. My first outrageous attempt was joining the Northville Rowing Team.

Rowing is more than a sport to me. This sport is heavily focused on teamwork so it increased my patience, my endurance, and my resilience. When I first joined the Rowing, we had practices five days a week and five hours a day after school. I had to run for nearly 12 miles for warm-up and practice on an ergometer for hours until I collapsed. This was enough for anyone to give up, but I decided to endure until the end. Finally when I had rowed my way up to the States Competition in Canada, my teammates and I decided to put all the skills we had polished into use. In the middle of the race, we all were exhausted, but we kept strong and stayed together. Rowing was a sport where if you did not row in rhythm and work with the team, winning was impossible. Our bodies had to use more than just physical strength but mental strength as well. In the end, when I held the medal in my hand for winning first place, I started to cry. I had started off as a shy, quiet member, but I was able to confidently row and finish to the end with my team. Rowing has definitely changed me more as a person; I was able to figure out that I was headstrong – if I put my mind to something it was almost impossible for me to quit.

The year after was when I put my mind to something – Psychology. I had taken AP Psychology and after class occasionally, I would discuss with my Psychology teacher about the different topics we had learned and my views on them. She decided that I had the skills that I did not know I had then, and sponsored the club I became the president of – Northville Students Without Borders.  This was where I realized I had another skill – the ability to lead and make decisions. The realization prompted me to found and become the advisor of another club – HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) that which nearly 60 to 70 members joined. I was able to make quick decisions for the group as well as finish the heavy workload that the club required. This was a very meaningful experience because it was the first time I had led a large mass of students to follow their passions, instead of just pursuing mine. The experience was remarkable and successful as the team placed in Regionals, States, and Nationals.

Joining the Northville Rowing Team and HOSA are two experiences in my life that hold great significance to me. These clubs have made me the strong, hard-working person I am and have inspired me to become more than what I limit myself to. My academic goals at Ohio State University include pursuing courses in Psychology and Biology and successfully enter Medical School; however, they also include finding a research position that interests me, gaining some experience in the hospital around a psychiatric environment, and much more. I not only wish to learn the subjects and grasp a greater knowledge on them, but I wish to experience Biology and Psychology in laboratory and hospital environments. This way, I can further pursue my dream of becoming a Psychiatrist.

Thank you!
