Congratulations, Jess, on her admission to candidacy for graduation with Research Distinction in Speech and Hearing Science. Jess will prep to pass a one-hour oral examination before a two-member faculty committee during her final term. Her undergraduate thesis topic is: Analysis of Working and Short Term Memory in Aphasia Patients using Temple Assessment of Language and (Verbal) Short-term Memory in Aphasia (TALSA) and lesion symptom mapping analyses (VLSM). We are wishing you the best of luck and excited to witness all your accomplishments!
PhD student, Victoria Diedrichs, has been chosen as a recipient of a 2022 New Century Scholars Doctoral Scholarship. The goal of the TL1 Mentored Clinical Fellowship is to increase the number of well-trained clinician-scientists who can lead the design and oversight of future clinical investigations to address the nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical needs. It is awarded by OSU’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and funded through a grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NATS). We were so honored to have the opportunity to introduce Jess Timog to the lab this summer! Jess is a member of the Advancing Diversity in Neuroimaging Research (ADNiR) initiative, run by the CCBBI here at Ohio State. She is interested in language acquisition among multilingual children and the effect of stroke on people with aphasia. We hope to work with Jess again in the future!

Congratulations to Dr. Stacy Harnish for receiving a 5-year, $2.3 million NIH R01 grant!! The grant is titled Laying the Groundwork for Personalized Medicine in Aphasia Therapy: Genetic and Cognitive Predictors of Restorative Treatment Response and is funded by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders. Co-investigators include Dr. Christopher Bartlett, Dr. Jeff Pan, Dr. Stephen Petrill, Dr. David Osher, and Dr. Vivien Lee. We are excited to be starting this new project! Congratulations to Monica Newport for placing 2nd in the Language & Cognitive Development category at the OSU Denman Undergraduate Research Forum for her research poster entitled Assessing Semantic Network Integrity via the Word-Picture Verification Paradigm: Evidence for Shared Input and Output Lexical-Semantic Abilities. Monica completed this project in the lab as part of her undergraduate thesis. She will graduate in May and then plans to get her Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology. Well done, Monica!

Congratulations to Dr. Harnish for being awarded an Advancing Academic-Research Careers (AARC) Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The AARC Award is intended to facilitate greater retention of pre-tenured, PhD-level faculty in our discipline. The award supports mentored teaching and research activities. Dr. Harnish will complete these activities over the 18-month funding period with guidance from her teaching and researcher mentors, Eric Healy and Christopher Bartlett.
Congratulations to Jenny for successfully defending her PhD dissertation defense in June on expository discourse and the influences of cognition and language. She will graduate with her PhD in Speech and Hearing Science in August! Congratulations Dr. Lundine!

Jenny received an Alumni Grant for Graduate Research and Scholarship from the Ohio State University to fund a portion of her dissertation work. She was also one of 20 doctoral students in the United States to receive an ASHA New Century Doctoral Scholarship. Congratulations Jenny!
