Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

Hiya!

My name is Sonya Anufriyenko, and I am from Mentor, Ohio (about thirty minutes from Cleveland). I am currently a first year at Ohio State University working towards achieving a major in mechanical engineering and a minor Russian language.

A photo from one of my personal photography projects focused on a darker fairy tale theme.

Me with the Greek Ambassadors to the United States in Washington, D.C.

While in high school I was in many clubs, but my favorites were Model United Nations, Creative Writing, and most of all, Red Lightning Photography. I first joined Model United Nations when I was in sixth grade, and as a result, my love of international politics and appreciation for different cultures was able to grow. I picked photography also while in middle school, and in tenth grade my grandparents gifted me my first professional grade camera which I still use today, a Nikon D3300. I especially love photographing landscapes and architecture, but this past year I delved into photographing portraits and started my own photography business. I have since photographed headshots for an entertainment company, senior photos, and have gotten to work on some of my own projects for my portfolio. I also participated in Student Government and Improv, which introduced me to many new life long friends.

My grandfather worked as a communications engineer in the Russian space program, and his stories are what greatly inspired me to become an engineer. Throughout my years at school I developed a love of mathematics and science through my AP courses such as Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, and Physics. The various building events in Science Olympiad allowed me to start building my own devices such as helicopters, planes, bridges, and towers, further growing my love for science and interest in engineering. I became absolutely sure that I wanted to be an engineer during my senior project shadowing a materials science engineer and researcher at NASA Glenn Research Center. I was able to witness the research and testing of high-temperature super alloys used in rocket parts, as well as tour the labs at NASA, including the Creep Labs, the Air Tunnel and Ice Research Lab, the Ballistics Lab, and the SLOPE Rovers Lab. I also built my own two walled lattice tower out of balsa wood that was 3 inches by 3 inches by 6 inches after independently studying trusses and lattice towers. My structure held over 900 lbs! After my experience at NASA, becoming an engineer changed from a possible career path to my dream job.

While in college I would like to continue developing my skills as a photographer and obtain an internship to gain experience first hand in the engineering field. My ultimate goal in college is to be able to fully utilize all of the resources and opportunities available to me in order to learn as much as I can and become a successful and qualified engineer. I plan to accomplish this while working hard and giving it my all, but also while saving time to explore Columbus, make friends, and even have some fun.
