According to federal law (Agricultural Hazardous Occupations Order), tractor certification courses are available from Ag Science teachers and Extension educators (no distinction between ANR, 4-H, CD, or FCS). These are the only 2 certifying agencies to issue the certificates to youth 14-15 years old who want to work FOR HIRE in an agricultural operation. This does not mean they are the only trainers… as the program can be coordinated and taught by a variety of subject matter experts and industry professionals. However the course must be under the oversight of Extension/Ag Science educators.
In Ohio, there are approximately 300 teens who receive their certifications each year. There are more who go through the training, but not all students receive certification. (There is a difference – mostly in paperwork filed and number of hours participating in the course – between general tractor and equipment safety, and receiving the certification).
Check in with Dee Jepsen to learn more about tractor certification and ways to offer it using VR.
