Managing a Successful Workplace

I currently work as an assistant manager for Ohio State in one of their dining facilities. I also have an interest in getting a bachelors degree in business. I think it takes many different skills and attributes to be a good manager. You have to know ho to handle your employees, coworkers, bosses, and customers. It’s important to be ready for whatever situation someone throws at you, so critical thinking skills are needed. I’m looking to improve myself in the future with varies tips, tricks, and reminders about management techniques.

This video discussess some tips and tricks about how to maintain a successful workplace by keeping repair with customers, coworkers, subordinates, and bosses. This video was made by an account called ‘Workforce Singapore’. This video was made in 2013, however this account has continued to make workforce videos all the way into 2019. This account seems very interested in giving helpful tips for managers in order to run a happy and successful work place. The downfall of this source is that we aren’t sure where the information and advice is coming from, and I had a hard time finding this source referenced in other works.

https://fisher.osu.edu/

I chose to include the OSU Fisher College of business because it is a very credible educational institution. This website provides multiple different sections including: business programs,  departments and research, initiatives, recruiting, and news. The programs and articles on this website could most certainly strengthen a person’s managerial skills. It is updated frequently, make it a time relevant source. The downfall of this website is obviously they are biased/have an agenda as they want to recruit new students into the program.

https://abc6onyourside.com/news/local/ohio-man-accused-of-throwing-iguana-at-manager-inside-restaurant

This article is about an incident that happened in a restaurant in Ohio. An upset customer pulled an iguana out of his shirt and threw it at the restaurant manager. He was arrested for animal cruelty and resisting arrest. Although it sounds funny, I did chose this article for a reason. Firstly, it was published and referenced by multiple news sites and the event took place this year. And secondly, it is a good reminder that crazy and unexpected things can happen in the workplace. As a manager, you must be ready to deal with many types of situations for yourself, customers, and your employees. The downside of this article is much of the information on the incident is brief.

This is a book called “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion” by Robert B. Cialdini. I included this on my page because I would like to read it and think I could get a lot out of it. As a manager, it is vital that your workers have respect for you and are able to complete tasks you assign them. Sometimes, this is easier said than done. I think this book would be useful to give both personal insight as well as tips on how to be successfully persuasive in the workplace. A downside of this book would be that it was written in 2006 and perhaps a newer book would talk about some more recent topics.

www.lyndagratton.com

This website I have included is about a woman named Lynda Gratton. She is a professor in Management Practice at the London Business School. Her program is considered to be one of the top Human Resources programs in the world. She has published many books and held many speeches about her experiences in the business world. One downside to this website is it very clearly has personal bias. However, it is very relevant to this topic because it provides her personal insight.
