Exploring Tech Tools

Hello students!

This page will serve as a resource for you to explore different types of learning tech tools! This page includes relevant course content, but it is important for you to be mindful of the learning tools being used.

Click on the Play button below for an important message to get us started in exploring tech tools! 🙂

The Lesson for Module 1 is available via the Prezi presentation below.

What do you notice about the Prezi that is different from PowerPoints or other forms of computer or web-based resources/lectures you have viewed in the past?? Prezi is a free resource. To explore further and practice using it on your own. Click here!

Now that you have viewed Module 1, please take some time to complete the quiz below. This quiz was created by using another free tech tool; Google Forms.

Utilizing this tool allows me to customize a quiz, automate the grading, and I when I login to my Google account I can view your grades, as well as see how well you performed as a  class. Once you have completed this quiz your access to Module 2 in Carmen will be enabled.

THANK YOU!

  1. Danielle, I really like the graphics you chose for your Prezi–very fitting! The text intro to your course (is that what this is intended to be?) is divided up nicely into digestible chunks. Look for typos (“eacho f the stops,” lead instead of led) in the second paragraph of text. The way you’ve laid out the five pages of the Yale guide is great. I’ve never thought of doing that, and it works well. I wonder if you need to give your readers a few additional tips about navigating a Prezi. I had to view it in full screen mode to get the Yale guide pages big enough to read comfortably. Not a problem at all because I know where the button is for that, and I also know I can drag the background around to move where I want to go. I’m a little concerned that your learners may not know those things. You could present it to a few test subjects and see if they fumble with it or use it intuitively. At any rate, it’s a very nice piece!

I like the Google form quiz. That really reinforces the important points of the Yale guide in the Prezi. I submitted my answers.

I’m glad you are having your students use Voki! I introduced it to faculty in my department, and they took off with it more or less on their own. That tells me that it is intuitive to use. I created some simple steps to create a Voki. If you want to copy and adapt them, please feel free: https://u.osu.edu/tornwall.2/2013/09/06/voki-get-your-students-attention/

Great job on all three pieces. The interactivity is excellent!

  2. Danielle, good work on the Prezi lesson. You’ve fleshed this out to be a very substantial piece of work. You begin with three good learning objectives. The second objective, “Students will gain a basic introductory understanding . . . ” is going to be very difficult to measure. If you look at your assessment, you are actually having them “identify” the meaning and goals of the dissertation as an academic assignment. “Identify” is at the level of introductory understanding on the Bloom’s hierarchy, so this might be an appropriate verb to use that is measurable. You might be able to think of a better verb than identify. In fact, you have them formulate their own question a researcher should ask themselves regarding their research design. That’s a slightly higher level on Bloom’s for which you might find a higher level verb.

I really like the idea of having the learner create a Voki. You’ve embedded a screencast of the Voki rather than the Voki itself. Was that intentional? Here’s an article that explains how to embed the video in a Prezi: http://blog.voki.com/2013/06/04/voki-tip-of-the-week-embed-voki-on-prezi/ I’m not sure if that will be helpful as I’ve not tried it myself, and I may be making an incorrect assumption that you wanted to embed just the video and not a video of the entire Voki page.

I see the link to log in to Carmen–good work. That gives the learner a good target for the next step. Is the quiz you currently have in the Google form going to be moved to Carmen?

The YouTube video at the end of your lesson is a nice way to wrap up this lesson! Inspiring! And funny. Very good work!

    • Addendum: Danielle, the Voki in the Prezi kept me wondering, so I investigated more. I see that there’s not a way to insert iFrame or embed code into a Prezi (at least not that I can find), so you’ve done exactly what you can to insert the video into your Prezi. I suppose it might be good to make the frame fit around just the Voki itself, but you may have had good reasons for wanting to show more than just the Voki character. At any rate, thanks for that inspiration to do more research on Voki and Prezi!

  3. In my presentations I used some of the more safe tool, but after looking at your presentation I think that I will visit a couple of the other sites and play with the tools a little. I like Voki a lot and I think that students are impressed with the use of technology in a course … it brings it to their level.

  4. Thank you for the feedback…much appreciated! I was impressed with the number of tech tools I could accommodate within one Prezi lesson. I think having students create a voki as well is a great exercise, as it is not only a lot of fun, but also allows for the opportunity for them to go beyond regurgitating information, but instead, allows for creativity and expression too. I was surprised how the embedding of the document worked in the Prezi too. I don’t think that I would have chosen to do so if the document was longer than 5 pages, but for a short and concise document such as the Guide, it worked out well I think. Thank you again!

  5. Danielle,
Your use of Prezi gives me exciting ideas! Thanks. It’s almost an LMS of its own.
I’m curious about how one, or one’s department, decides whether to make this kind of content public or private. On the one hand, it might be good promo for your program, but at the same time it’s intended for a specific group who have competed successfully in the admissions process… I’m also wondering if the decision to make it public would impact any of your decisions in terms of content or labelling–for instance, dissertations in other fields may involve different conventions. Anyway…thanks for getting me thinking!
    Carolyn

  6. Wow, I loved your Prezi. I have a feeling you have done Prezi’s before; that, or you spent a really long time on that assignment! Assuming a previous knowledge of Prezi, how long did it take to create that?

I would like the link to the celebrate your dissertation you tube video. Someone in our post-candidacy seminar is finishing in April, and I thought I might share it. As he is not nearly as spry as the young man in the video, it would be entertaining to contemplate Will leaping all over campus. Tamara will appreciate the picture.

  7. This is a fantastic resource for integrating technology into learning! The use of tools like Prezi, Voki, and Google Forms not only enhances engagement but also provides practical applications for both educators and students. It’s inspiring to see such innovative approaches to teaching. For content creators looking to grow alongside these tech tools, a YouTube monetization checker is a great way to track your channel’s progress and eligibility for earning revenue!
