Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: To achieve global awareness I want to become aware of other cultures and languages by immersing myself in them. I went to Nicaragua over the summer of 2018 through Global Brigades to volunteer. Through this volunteer experience, I was able to develop a bond with the local community in Nicaragua by providing a free health screening, building public bathrooms with a better drainage system and playing games with the children. By living in Nicaragua for a little while, I experienced their food, their daily routine, and more. Other than the Nicaragua volunteer trip, I also want to become more aware of people from different backgrounds by conversing with international students through multiple Asian representative clubs like CASA, KSA, JSO, and more. Through my involvement in CASA, KSA, JSO, I’ve been able to learn more about other Asian cultures, like their food, language, clothing, and I’ve been able to broaden my horizon and perspective of this world.

Original Inquiry: I currently participate in research at Rightmire Hall and have at one point been part of two research labs: one biochemical based at Rightmire Hall under Dr. Yoon and the other data analytic based at Grant Hospital. Through research, I want to learn while trying to find real-life scientific discoveries. I’ve learned about scientific protocols, different research techniques, and data gathering skills. Through my time doing data analysis, I learned how to compile and find trends in data, and put it together in a comprehensive way to show certain correlations.

Academic Enrichment: To make sure that I achieve my fullest potential academically, I want to take classes that may not be related to my major that may help me in the future become a better physician. That’s why I’ve taken classes like medical ethics philosophy and why I’m pursuing a minor in Medical Humanities under the English Department. I plan on utilizing all the resources available to me and have used the library, Younkin Success Center, to do as well as I can in my classes and have gone to office hours for both my professors and TAs. Being in honors, if I need help, I can utilize walk-in hours, especially for my major, which I definitely will use when I need help academically, scheduling-wise or grade-wise. I also want to take a graduate level course during my senior year through my major, which is available to the neuroscience major to challenge myself and learn in the most competitive environment.

Leadership Development: Currently, I am working hard to participate and contribute to 3 clubs: PERIOD, ENCompass, and Boo Radley. Through these clubs, I want to not only instigate events and make meaningful contributions to the club and the community we are representing, but also want to attain leadership titles, so I have more resources to contribute to the organization and make a positive change. I am currently the Treasurer for PERIOD and OB/GYN Site Coordinator for ENCompass. I want to continue working hard through PERIOD to provide more menstrual products to low-income families and through ENCompass to link low-income patients to social resources that they might need. I’m also part of First Aid Service Team (FAST) where I work different First-aid stations for different events around Columbus, which requires leadership in initiating and determining certain treatment plans for the patients that come to us for help. I also want to partake in summer camps where I will have to be a leader to perform necessary duties.

Service Engagement: Through the clubs and volunteer opportunities that are available in/near OSU, I want to focus on helping the community in regards to providing access to healthcare. Through ENComopass, we are trying to find out how people of Columbus’s community receive health care and what transportation services are most accessible to people, while also providing individual resources to people that need it. Through PERIOD, we are providing free menstrual products to those leaving in shelters/drop-in centers and educate the community about sex ed and the normal biological processes for both sexes. Through FAST I work to man the First Aid stations and provide any treatment within my level of care to ensure the safety and health of those at these events. I also volunteer through Grant Hospital where I work as a greeter at the Emergency Department and provide the patients with various needs.

Overall, I want to use what I learn not only in class but also through engagement outside of class to understand and solve real-life problems in the community and issues that are global.
