Artifact 3

BuckeyeThon

Last year I decided to join BuckeyeThon’s General Body team. I have never personally known a child with pediatric cancer or joined a group with such a passion for fighting towards one goal. Since I joined last year, the 2020 Dance Marathon was online and I was unable to attend in person. So this year would be the my first Dance Marathon!

About 2 week ago, on November 6 & 7, I attending my first Dance Marathon. It was in the RPAC for 24 hours with the rest of general body and all of the team members. Over the 24 hours, I worked different shifts for things like silent disco, inflatables, or team member lounge while attending rave hour and getting about 4 hours of sleep. Even though I was extremely tired, the Dance Marathon was an amazing experience where I met a lot of great people that had the same passion.

By being at the Dance Marathon, I changed some previous ideas that I had. I was able to witness how many people can come together from different experiences and background, but have a strong passion for the fight against pediatric cancer. Attached is a picture of the total amount raised by everyone in the organization. This allowed me to understand and have a greater love for BuckeyeThon as an organization. The support and devotion within the organization has helped me change as a person and the understand that I should surround myself with people that have such a great care for others.

Artifact 2

For my artifact, I chose playing sports. Sports have always been a big part of my life by helping shape who I am today. From sports, I have been able to learn about being a competitor, teammate, and leader. In my last season playing basketball, I was able to learn so much more about the game than winning. The day before my team and I were supposed to leave for the 2020 Girls State Basketball Tournament, the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19. My teammates and I were really upset that we were not able to finish our season like we wanted too. Even though things did not go the way they were planned, I was able to learn that I should be thankful for the memories and to appreciate the things that could end.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: As a Mount Leadership Society Scholar, I have learned about global awareness through many meetings about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Not only have I attended meeting about global awareness, but I have wanted to become more well-educated on the topic. Last year, I enrolled in History 3307 which allowed me to learn about African Health and Healing. In this course, we learned about diseases that affected the world, but also how European involvement in Africa had many negative effects. I have been able to learn the power of a single story and how by only looking at a situation from one point of view limits your knowledge, understand, and equality.

Original Inquiry: I am currently taking a class called “Movement is Medicine” which discusses all the positive effects exercise and physical activity have on the body. We recently learned that exercise can help express certain genes that relate to lowered risk for diseases. At birth we are given a set of DNA and genes that we are not able to change, but by making certain changes in our life we can be able to change how they are expressed. I have taken some courses with labs involved, but as I continue my college career to study physical therapy, I would like to learn more about how exercise can help with injuries or lower the risk of possible injuries.

Academic Enrichment: After I complete my undergraduate degree, I plan to attend physical therapy school. During the school year I work hard to take classes to complete my degree but will also benefit me in physical therapy school. I have worked hard my freshman year to complete all my prerequisites to now focus on completing my degree and obtaining observation hours to apply.

Leadership Development: Since last fall I have been part of BuckeyeThon’s General Body and held the role for Special Initiatives for the Development Team. These roles have allowed me to be involved in a club that is passionate about there cause. Not only does BuckeyeThon have some involvement with the medical field, but also with businesses and building connections with those around you and in the community. From BuckeyeThon, I have learned about true passion and how passion can build strong connections.

Service Engagement: Through Mount Leadership Society Scholars, second year Mounties are required to have 75 hours of community service. During the fall semester, I have been volunteering for 7 Cups, an online therapy and support website. I have been able to help many people through situations they are struggling with by providing them with someone to listen to them. Also during some of my breaks, I plan to volunteer at Hertiage Manor, a nursing home in my community, and at a hospital or physical therapy center.

Career

After two years in college, my major and my professional goals have not changed. I am currently majoring in Exercise Science with a plan to attend Physical Therapy School to become a Physical Therapist. So far in college, I have taken multiple courses that have supported my professional goals. Some of those courses that I have already taken or are currently take are “Movement is Medicine”, “Abnormal Psychology”, “Anatomy 3300”, and “Adult Exercise Programming – Implantation”.  Some other courses that I will be taking in the future that will help advance my goals will be “Comprehensive Laboratory in Exercise Science” and “Promoting Behavior Change in Sport, Leisure, & Exercise”. Over my two years of being at Ohio State, I have been in numerous clubs and organizations. But the three organizations that have supported my professional goals are BuckeyeThon General Body, Pre PT/OT Club, and Mount. Each of these organizations have supported and taught me skills in leadership, communication, and understanding the value of other individuals I work with. Even though I have had a lot of support through academics and extra-curriculars at OSU, two mentors that have helped me with my professional goals are my mom, Jennifer, and Andrea. My mom has been a Physical Therapist for over 25 years and has a lot of knowledge and understanding of the profession. She has helped me in so many ways especially with my questions about physical therapy or about classes that she believes would be the most beneficial for me in the profession. Andrea is a physical therapist that just graduated from physical therapy school this past May. Over this past Christmas break, I observed Andrea at her work for 2 weeks. She has provided me with the opportunity to be in a physical therapy office and has explained certain exercises and treatments to me. She has allowed to ask questions about what she does each day and what the profession would look like after graduation. Also, she has sat down with me to go through possible physical therapy schools I could apply to. Both of my mentors have connected me with multiple opportunities and support that align with my goals. Overall, I have had numerous experiences and opportunities that have supported my professional goals.

Artifacts

I chose to write about my 4-H experience as my artifact due to the meaning it has had in my life since I was nine years old. I have participated in many fairs throughout the years, including county and state fairs. Both have taught and shaped me as a leader. For each show, I set a personal goal, either to win a class or showmanship, but I always try to be a leader in the ring. Not every single show met my expectations, yet that is what has shaped me. I went from winning the Ohio State Fair one year, to only winning a class the next. In those defeats, I realized I couldn’t be upset about my results, and I had to lead by example. After every show, no matter the outcome, I would go and shake the hands of my competitors, congratulating them on their accomplishment. Participating in fairs not only builds friendships and memories, but has developed me as a leader that will impact me for the future. Being involved in 4-H has helped me realize my potential of being a leader within my profession. As the president of the Anna Livestock 4-H Club, I am the one that is looked to for advice and guidance. As I plan to become a Physical Therapist, adults and athletes will consult with me for guidance regarding their health and wellness.

About Me

Hi, my name is Michaela Ambos and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University majoring in Exercise Science. I am from Anna, Ohio, and went to Anna High School. I was actively involved in our school’s Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program competing in state competitions as well as President of the club. Throughout high school I participated in many service events which included volunteering at Wilson Health Hospital, New Choices, and coaching youth soccer and basketball. Outside of school I was the President of the Anna Livestock 4-H Club and an executive member of the Shelby County Junior Fair Board.

At Ohio State, I am part of the Mount Leadership Society Scholars program. I am involved in BuckeyeThon and hope to join more clubs throughout my time at Ohio State. Eventually I want to volunteer and work at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. After obtaining my undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University, I plan to attend Graduate School for Physical Therapy and become a physical therapist.
