Reflection on G.O.A.L.S.

Global awareness is key to appreciating the diversity the world has to offer. It is important to understand how different parts of the world work in order to achieve a cohesive work ethic that can be translated to any job in any field in any part of the globe. During my time at Ohio State, I have become globally aware through my coursework in the anthropology department, where I learned that archaeology is a useful tool to connect human ancestors from across the world to who we are today. I have also learned about global awareness through diversity workshops in my sorority. The Native American Cohort enlightened us on what it means to be an indigenous person at Ohio State.

Original inquiry is principal in developing new technologies, policies, medical advances, and much more. Ohio State offers many avenues for original inquiry. I am currently talking to research labs on campus and at the James. I have interviewed with a lab that works with identifying genetic markers for cancer. My goal is to be in a lab by the time I begin my third year.

Being a part of the honors program was the first step to leading an academically enriching life. To continue to practice academic enrichment, I plan to continue to take honors and upper-level courses. I chose the biology major not only because I believe that it will give me an excellent foundation for medical school, but it also has the potential to introduce me to areas of science that I’m not familiar with. This coursework will allow me to combine my interests in anatomy, evolution, biology, and epidemiology into one area of study while giving me opportunities to discover new interests.

Leadership development is not only crucial to being successful in the honors program, but also the job force. To expand on leadership development, I plan to continue to be a member of the pre-medicine club and the women in math and science club. I plan to run for an office in women in math and science this year to further my development. I currently hold a leadership position in my sorority. Along with clubs, I will pursue research at OSU and work in the medical field outside of the university. I acquired my phlebotomy certificate in June of 2016 and plan to obtain a job with this certificate so that I can begin my leadership in the medical field early.

Service engagement is a way to not only better myself, but the community around me. I like to donate my time to helping community members to gain access to healthcare. This cause is important to me as a human and future doctor. I have volunteered at the Wexner Medical Center since my second semester and I am currently in the Honors and Scholars Semester of Service where I am working with the Suicide Prevention Program.
