Sports and Wellness Scholars Program

The J. Michael Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars (DSWS) Program is specifically designed to help students identify and expand upon personal interests in sport and wellness. Coming into college, this scholars program allowed me to create close friendships, develop leaderships skills, and network. This program is focused on sports and wellness, however, the skills I learned from it have been useful across many fields and courses I have encountered. Thanks to this program, I learned about the Student Wellness Center where I have been employed for the last 5 years, I learned about health and wellness resources on campus, I learned how to work with a very diverse group and how to let other take control of a project.

During my second year I was given the opportunity to be a Kick-Off Week Captain for this program. This position allowed me to welcome and orient the incoming class of scholars to the program and to campus. This scholars program has the students move in almost a week before the rest of the Ohio State student body does. During this week we spend our time making friends, doing team building exercises, and helping the community.

After the second year of the program, each class has it’s own graduation. To graduate from this program, the students must meet certain requirements such as: community service hours, 3.0 GPA, attending all meetings, and a few others.

Below is a photo of me and two of my roommates from my freshman year in this program. This program gave me a lot to be thankful for, and these lifelong friendships are one of them.
